Title: Veterinary Prog Specialist I(LIVESTOCK) Location:North carolina Work Type: Hybrid, Full Time Job ID: JR-102109 Job Description: About Us The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. Description of Work All veterinary services fall under the jurisdiction of the Veterinary Division. It has a very specific mission that focuses on providing animal disease programs designed to control, diagnose and eradicate diseases in livestock and poultry. Most of these animal disease control programs are cooperative efforts with the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services and animal industry groups. The Veterinary Division also administers the North Carolina Animal Welfare Act. The Veterinary Division is currently comprised of three sections: Animal Health Programs (AHP) o Poultry o Livestock Diagnostic Laboratories Animal Welfare Programs Duties involve monitoring livestock by visual examination and possibly serological tests for the presence of communicable disease, auditing livestock markets and dealer activities and records to assure interstate and intrastate movements of livestock. Inspecting markets for licensure to operate, instructing livestock owners and market operators in the proper methods of sanitation and management as a means of preventing the occurrence of disease as well as record keeping. Additional duties as required or assigned. Must live in or adjacent to the following counties: Anson, Bladen, Brunswick, Cabarrus, Columbus, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Sampson, Scotland, Stanly, Richmond, Robeson or Union. Home based/field position This position requires travel. A state vehicle and gas card are provided. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences $39,671-$69,425 Knowledge of principles and/or techniques and regulations associated with husbandry, diagnostics, biosecurity, welfare, euthanasia and industry/market structure relevant to the veterinary program(s) area requiring assignment. Possess conflict resolution skills and the ability to instruct/train audiences of a wide range of skill levels. Ability to work independently or with a group in a team setting to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals of a wide range of backgrounds, socio-economic classes, and authority levels through the use of effective verbal, written and new communication tools and skills, including utilizing available technological tools. Ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain equipment and machinery such as restraining devices, animal identification instruments, tissue sampling equipment, sanitizing equipment and various types of office equipment. Live, large animal handling and/or production experience is preferred to be able to recognize abnormal behavior and physical sign of clinical disease in livestock and take appropriate actions.
