The Opportunity:

Embry-Riddle is now hiring a Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop Lab Supervisor and Teaching Assistant at the Daytona Beach campus. The Mechanical Engineering Department engages students in a variety of hands-on, experiential learning activities designed to complement the undergraduate and graduate curricula. The undergraduate program has focus areas in High Performance Vehicles, Robotic Systems, Energy Systems, and Biomedical Systems, which have multiple associated student driven projects. The graduate program has similar focus areas as well as a variety of research projects, which may be student or faculty driven.

Responsibilities include:
  • Lab and Shop Supervision
  • Accept and coordinate lab/shop use requests from all personnel who desire to use any lab or shop facility for any purpose. This includes instructional activity as part of courses, research projects, student projects, demonstrations and tours, creation of research facilities for new faculty, and support of outside the College when time permits.
  • Maintain and publicize a master schedule of the use of labs and shop facilities. Resolution of conflicting requests will remain at the department chair level or higher.
  • Assess feasibility of requests for use of labs and shops by both faculty and students, and advice on possible modifications of requested activity.
  • Write, submit, and coordinate with Physical Plant requests for modification of physical facilities such as electrical supply, plumbing work, and permanently installed fixtures.
  • Train and supervise students, when course instructor is unable to do so, working on projects that are part of class work.
  • Monitor and supervise student groups in the Labs. This typically includes training students in safe tool and equipment use, making specialized parts that are beyond the students' skill level, and ensuring that materials and equipment are stored safely.
  • Train and supervise student employees, including Graduate Teaching/Research Assistants, when necessary.
  • Serve as mechanical design tutor for both students and faculty. The lab/shop supervisor must be able to teach the requesters the rudiments of how to redesign their hardware to improve its functionality and manufacturability.
  • Train and advise faculty on safe and efficient use of lab equipment. Maintain all documentation required by the University and College.
  • Self-supervise. Dependably and willingly work with minimum supervision on a broad variety of fabrication and repair tasks.
  • Supervise other full time staff in the future as laboratory administration expands.
  • Training and Teaching Assistance
  • Provide students the necessary training for use of the CNC and manual machines.
  • Assist in the instruction of ME 208: Manufacturing Lab (4 sections in the fall, 4 sections in the spring, 1 section in the summer).
  • Facilities Operations. Normal daily operations will require the ability to:
  • Plan and perform machining, woodwork, welding, painting, plumbing, and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment in shops and instructional labs.
  • Research and evaluate specifications for mechanical, electrical, and hardware components of machines and lab equipment.
  • Handle purchasing of routine supplies for a broad variety of shops and instructional labs.
  • Design and build new pieces of experimental apparatus or modify existing ones, often with very short lead time before they have to be put into classroom service.
  • Give design advice and construction assistance to students and faculty who are building new research equipment or class experiments.
  • Examine potential equipment to be acquired (often with travel off site), determine benefits of equipment, supervise delivery, and coordinate key details to Physical Plant and contractors for installation.
  • Work closely with College staff to maintain information on lab equipment and budgetary issues.
  • Maintenance
  • Maintain and repair of broad variety of machines and lab equipment.
  • Oversee contracted repair when necessary.
  • Coordinate with the custodial contractor to keep lab and shop spaces clean and safe.
  • Safety
  • Implement safety procedures in the shops and instructional labs that meet University and OHSA guidelines.
  • Give continual safety instruction to students and faculty who use instructional labs and equipment.
  • Maintain the MSDS (hazardous material data sheet) system.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Associate?s degree or completion of program of 18+ months after high school.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience. Applicants for the position should have experience in coordination with a physical plant, training on machines/equipment, monitoring of lab usage, working within budget guidelines, and the ability to work self-sufficiently on a wide variety of tasks.
  • Ability to perform machining, woodworking, welding, and fabrication as well as assisting in the specification and building of equipment for student, faculty, and research projects.
  • Ability to repair a broad variety of machines and lab equipment and oversee repair when necessary.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for labs and shops is required as well as familiarity with the MSDS system.
The primary responsibility of this position is to supervise student activities in the Machine Shop Lab and work with the University?s Environmental, Health and Safety Officer to ensure compliance with all health and safety policies. Broad knowledge and flexibility are essential in this position. Such supervisory effort includes, but not limited to the following list:
  • be a safety advocate,
  • be capable of effective oral and written communication,
  • have experience working with young adults (18-25 years old),
  • have knowledge of manufacturing processes (milling, welding, turning, etc.),
  • be familiar with OSHA and other safety/health regulations,
  • have knowledge of welding, and
  • be familiar with CNC manufacturing.
