As part of Student Academic Support Services, the Tutor Program Coordinator will oversee the centralization of tutoring services at OHSU. This position will work with individual schools and programs to create new tutoring options or expand upon existing tutoring programs in School of Medicine, UME, School of Dentistry and School of Nursing. This position will oversee the centralization and on-going management of recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling and oversight of content and writing tutors in all programs at OHSU. The goal of this position is to create a coordinated, centralized and equitable tutoring program that serves all students at OHSU.

Function/Duties of Position

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with programs and schools to recruit and hire content and writing tutors.
  • Manage student workers, providing support and feedback to improve tutoring services.
  • Develop high-quality workshops and other resources to assist tutors in gaining the necessary skills and learning strategies to provide effective support within their OHSU programs.
  • Maintain organized records for the management of student employees, including performance evaluation.
  • Facilitate and maintain a streamlined scheduling process for students requesting tutor support.
  • Develop an annual report to include programming, usage data, trends, impact of services on learners, and recommendations for future services.
  • Coordinate and collaborate on programming, faculty development, and academic committees with OHSU?s academic programs, support offices, and student groups.
  • Other Duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position supervises 50+ student workers
Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • This position Monitors expenditures against departmental budget; prepares necessary documentation for supervisor review/approval; tabulates budgetary data; calculates figures, and checks for accuracy.
Required Qualifications
  • Master?s degree in education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field with applied knowledge of adult learning theory and educational psychology with a documented history of student support success AND one year of experience supervising tutors.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience; AND presentation skills or public speaking experience.
  • Experience working as a tutor and one year experience supervising tutors or running a tutoring program.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of groups and individuals.
  • Knowledge of and experience with training tutors
  • CRLA certification or equivalent
  • Compliance with OHSU Code of conduct, respect in the workplace, applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole.
  • A good understanding of thinking and learning processes and counseling/consulting skills to assess these processes and teach new strategies on an individual basis.
  • Experience teaching a wide-variety of active learning strategies to help learners develop these skills, and the patience and empathy to discern the student?s skill level and to build on the student?s individual strengths.
  • Knowledge and experience in consulting with faculty and collaborating with colleagues on academic support programs.
  • Well-versed in the foundations of curriculum and instruction and ability to bridge theory and practice for diverse learners.
  • A strong commitment to social and ecological justice in education.
  • Knowledge of teaching and coaching multi-lingual learners and culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of groups and individuals.
  • Comfortable in asynchronous and face-to-face student interactions.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working with a broad community.
  • Commitment to serving a diverse population and advancing student success through highly engaged and high impact educational practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field with applied knowledge of adult learning theory and educational psychology with a documented history of student support success.
  • 3-5 years strong supervisory and coordinating experience in a tutoring environment.
  • Experience in higher education classroom, clinical, and/or online teaching.
  • Knowledge of and experience with training tutors in a medical education context.
