Position: Student Support Specialist

Location: Heritage Middle School

Dates: 2023-2024 School Year

Schedule: 190 Days 8 hours - Non Affiliated Work Agreement Primary function:
Student Support Specialist will work with a roster of students with identified risk factors (more than one suspension the previous year, a suspension in the current year, three behavior referrals in the current year). This position would also be a member of the Student Assistant Team. The Student Support Specialist will provide evidence-based practices and best practices to support students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs. In addition, this position would progress monitor students and review data with Student Support Team.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a degree from a four-year college.
  • BA or BS degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology, or similar field preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Experience working with high school age children preferred.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work with students, parents and staff to plan/prepare for improved school success.
  • Experience working with children of diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing with students, parents, school staff, and administrators.
  • Experience in de-escalation, conflict resolution and behavior support strategies.
  • Experience working with parents and children in difficult and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and staff in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
  • Develops data collection systems and analyzes data to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention plans and recommends changes to plans as needed to improve student responding.
  • Attends workshops, conferences, and other educational opportunities in order to facilitate continued learning within the areas of mental health, social/emotional/learning, trauma informed practices, and behavior intervention
