BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of a Principal, perform translating, tutorial services and interpreting services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students; translate for students using appropriate manual and oral communications; perform clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school supplemented by demonstrated training or college-level coursework in sign language, an associate degree.

EXPERIENCE:
Two years experience performing interpreting and translating functions for the hearing impaired including some experience in classroom situations or at public meetings.

SUBSTITUTION:
Forty-eight units of college level coursework, or qualifying score on District "Instructional Proficiency" examination may be substituted for the required associate degree.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid certificate with a score of level 4.0 or higher, issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or equivalent certificate issued by one of the following recognized evaluating agencies is required:

1. National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
2. American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (ACCI)
3. Educational Interpreter Performance Evaluation (EIPA)
4. Educational Sign System Evaluation (ESSE)

Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics at or exceeding that required for high school seniors as stated in the California Education Code 45344.5.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles and practices of fingerspelling and signed English.
Concerns and problems of deaf and hard of hearing students.
Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics of the hearing impaired.
Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
Child guidance principles and practices.
Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Oral and written communication skills.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Operation of instructional and office equipment.

ABILITY TO:
Translate language into visual signs utilizing oral communication, fingerspelling, sign language and other manual communication techniques.
Read, understand and accurately interpret fingerspelling and signs of deaf and non-verbal persons.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward hearing impaired students.
Communicate effectively in oral and written form, and using an appropriate manual communication language.
Prepare instructional materials for the deaf and hard of hearing as directed by the teacher.
Perform general clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and maintaining routine records.
Provide instructional assistance to students in a variety of basic subjects.
Operate assigned instructional and office equipment.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Dexterity of hands and fingers to sign and finger spell.
Continuous use of elbows, shoulders, neck, back, lips and/or jaw.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Bending at the waist to assist students.
Seeing to read a variety of materials and the sign language of others.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Assist students by translating a variety of instructional exercises and by presenting various instructional materials designed to enhance the learning process; translate instructional directions to students and enhance communication between student and teacher; interpret class lectures, class discussions, tests, assemblies and special ceremonies. E

Tutor and interpret for individual and small groups of deaf and hard-of-hearing students to reinforce and follow-up instructional concepts utilizing sign language and manual communication techniques; assist students with study activities in carrying out the various aspects of their individual education plan. E

Prepare and assist in preparing, duplicating, and laminating a variety of instructional materials and learning aides. E

Maintain records related to assigned activities and students; report progress of students as assigned. E

Participate in parent conferences and IEP meetings as requested; provide sign to voice and voice to sign interpretations. E

Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet individual student needs. E

Accompany and interpret for assigned students on field trips. E

Participate in meetings, conferences and in-service training programs related to assigned activities. E

Operate a variety of instructional and office equipment. E

Provide assistance to staff including feeding, toileting and transferring students to and from wheelchairs as directed.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Recruitment Information

SCREENING PROCESS
The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.

Requests must be signed by your medical doctor, school psychologist, or learning consultant as appropriate and must be on provider letterhead and contain an actual signature.

EXAM PROTESTS
Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after six (6) months or one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.

SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.

OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT
Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Anaheim Union High School District Human Resources, Classified Office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a physical examination, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT
All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from Human Resources. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Human Resources office before the employee's first day of work. Approval will be based on the following criteria:
A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.
B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.
C) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.
