Job Summary: The prevention and intervention specialist assists building level and district administration with implementing substance abuse education, behavior management, violence prevention and intervention, suicide awareness and prevention programs for the district. Specialists plan with building administration to oversee the in-school intervention program, work with administration and teaching staff to address behavior management for students, participate on the student support team, and communicate and assist in supporting the SMART alternative education program for suspended and/or expelled students.



Hourly rate: Grade 11, Step 1: $28.15

Work hours: 7.5 hours per day

Work year: 9 months

Retirement: State of Alaska PERS

Bargaining Unit: Education Support Staff Association (ESSA)



Job Qualifications/Requirements (please review job description for qualifications and duties of the position):


  • Must hold and maintain, or be eligible for, certification as a qualified

with the State of Alaska. If the certification is not held at the time of hire, the certification application must be submitted to the state within the first 30 days of hire. * Must possess a total of 48 hours of college credit or have attained an associate?s degree in a human services related field.

  • Two (2) years experience working with students who are considered ?AT RISK,? have behavioral problems, or poor social skills

  • Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds.

  • Experience with data collection and interpretation.

  • Experience with case management, and interpretive skills to identify student needs.

  • Knowledge of current alcohol, tobacco, drugs, unauthorized substances, and other risky behavior trends involving children and adolescents.

  • Must have ability to facilitate groups on ATOD education, risky behaviors, social skills and anger management.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Competency utilizing Google Suite including Google Sheets.

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize and maintain effective follow-through while managing multiple projects.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, public speaking, written and oral communication skills in English to foster positive relationships with staff, students and peers in the community.

  • Demonstrated skills as a team builder, mediation and facilitator.

  • Strong knowledge of multi-tiered Systems of Support for Restorative Practices.
