Job Description



The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) seeks an Academic Success Advisor to support graduate programs. This individual will be a key contributor to supporting graduate student success by advising prospective and current students in making timely progress toward a degree through academic advising and support strategies through a variety of communication platforms, including in-person, email, phone, Zoom, and Salesforce.



The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment is home to four academic programs: Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering, Del E. Webb School of Construction, Construction Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.

Working Environment



  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work

  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Minimum Qualifications



Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Evidence of a master's degree in a related area appropriate to this position preferred

  • Experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention, or related student services (2 years)

  • Experience working with academic advising; graduate student advising preferred

  • Experience working with diverse populations and working with specific student populations, including international students and online students

  • Experience in using organizational skills and the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities and projects

  • Evidence of effective communication skills, including communicating by phone, email, in-person, and video.

  • Experience in offering high-level, fast-paced customer service in a student services environment that prioritizes the success of a student in their approach to academic advising

  • Experience in developing and maintaining professional working relationships while working in a team environment

  • Experience in designing presentation materials, delivering presentations, and organizing/planning special events

  • Experience with a student information system (i.e. Peoplesoft) and student degree auditing reports (i.e. DARS, iPOS)

  • Experience with computer programs including internet browsers, Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Drive applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms), and use of Adobe Connect, Zoom, Skype, and/or other technologies to advise students remotely

  • Experience with data retrieval and analysis (i.e. Analytics, WorkSpace, MyReports)

Essential Duties



  • Provides individual and group academic advising and/or interacts with students in support of academic success. Advising students, including prospective and current master's students. Student populations include master's degrees both online and on-campus. Leads recruitment and enrollment efforts for 4+1 accelerated programs, including advising 4+1 students and coordinating 4+1 information sessions. Works closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to support academic success.

  • Monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using a variety of technology-based tools (such as degree progress, customer relationship management, and analytics software/tools), and the application of retention-focused strategies, and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories.

  • Utilizes various tools and spreadsheets as needed by academic unit to track student progress; updates as needed, ensuring quality and attention to detail as priority. Utilizes online tools such as Gportal, iPOS, and Accelerated Tracking Tool to monitor and assist students with timely academic progress, course selection, and registration.

  • Reviews and processes of Plan of Study (iPOS) approvals, culminating experience guidance and paperwork. Maintains student records using PeopleSoft, electronic files, and Salesforce.

  • Provides timely and professional communication via email, in-person, Zoom, and phone with students, faculty, and staff to best address questions and concerns.

  • Maintains an openness to new and developing tools utilized across the University to aid in student success and excellent service.

  • Learns and use multiple systems at same time (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems, analytics software/tools).

  • Utilizes collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, writing, and by phone; establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships.

  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues; collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.

  • Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success.

  • Coordinates and/or presents at orientation or recruiting events/activities/workshops.

  • Works to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress, provides follow-up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services, and utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.

  • Works closely with students to provide support and counsel in order to identify academic options such as degree programs, extracurricular activities, clubs/organizations, research, and internships that align with academic and career goals; and non-academic options including student health, counseling & consultation, and career services.

  • Interprets and explains university, college, and school-level academic policies and procedures to students, faculty, and staff.

  • Develops and presents workshops or presentations for a variety of topics (prospective students, 4+1 pathway students, iPOS workshop, PhD events)

Salary Range



$44,000 - $50,000 per year; DOE
