General Description



The Assistant Director, under the direction of the Director of the Academic Learning Centers, manages the day-to-day operations of the Academic Learning Centers (ALCs); collaborates with professional tutors, peer tutors and faculty to ensure effective delivery of in-person and remote tutorial services; and delivers technical and back-end support for databases, LMS, and software.

Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities



  • Design innovative tutorial programs to address student needs.

  • Expand online resources including tutoring, academic coaching, and workshops.

  • Interview, train, supervise, and evaluate peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors.

  • Oversee the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) training and certification program.

  • Implement the use of ed tech tools and emerging technologies for tutoring services.

  • Serve as a liaison for the Virtual Campus to ensure support of online students.

  • Coordinate and monitor the online tutoring program.

  • Deliver technical and back-end support for ALC databases, LMS, and software.

  • Facilitate academic coaching program component to improve students' academic skills.

  • Collaborate with departments/divisions (e.g. EOF) on academic support initiatives.

  • Design and facilitate academic success workshops with ALC staff.

  • Manage the delivery of Collaborative Learning Sessions for subject matter areas.

  • Coordinate ALC's response to changes in subject matter curriculum.

  • Maintain instructional design of ALC Canvas shells.

  • Collaborate with Educational Support Coordinators on development of tutor manuals and instructional support materials.

  • Coordinate weekly tutor schedules in conjunction with the Director.

  • Maintain the ALC's social media and web presence.

  • Provide comprehensive annual report on tutoring data and other metrics, as requested.

  • Attend ALC, division, and college meetings, as requested.

  • Tutor in areas of expertise, as needed.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities.

  • Serve on college-wide committees.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Academic Learning Centers.

Education Requirements



  • Master's degree in a higher education discipline.

Experience



  • Minimum of five years teaching and/or tutoring experience. Experience must be both

in person and utilizing computer-aided instruction.

  • Experience in supervision and evaluation of student workers.

  • Experience with and knowledge of the CRLA standards.

Competencies and Skills Required



  • Demonstrates a commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment.

  • Has proficiency in Microsoft Office (Access, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) applications.

  • Works effectively with individuals and groups.

  • Must be able to learn new tutoring technologies quickly.

  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Has strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Must demonstrate ability to perform in a supervisory capacity.

  • Has experience working in academic support services in a multi-site college setting.

  • Has experience in using academic technologies, such as TutorTrac.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of best practices in tutoring services.

Physical Demands and Work Environment



  • This position's duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.

  • Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

  • Some travel required.

Salary $57,879-$65,000

Terms of Employment



Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Some evenings, weekends and extended hours will be required. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice to all on and off-campus sites as needed by the college. Employee must establish residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.
