The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for a Teacher Assistant at Western North Carolina School for the Deaf.



Salary Grade: NC01



Position: 60039000 This is a 10-month position that pays up to a budgeted salary of $28,272



The Teacher Assistant is primarily responsible for providing educational

assistance, both formal and informal, in the classroom setting to students at the direction of the classroom teacher. Examples include but are not limited to, one-on-one tutoring; remedial instruction of teacher specified skills; small group instruction; language acquisition skills; supervision of student activities in the classroom or in natural settings located in the

community; social/behavior skills monitoring; or other educational goals written in the IEP for each student. The aide is also responsible for performing other specified duties assigned by the classroom teacher and/or principal as needed. This requires the aide to work closely with professionals and paraprofessionals from outside the regular classroom to ensure proper programming. This position provides transportation for residential students as both a driver of school mini-buses and chaperone of students.



North Carolina School for the Deaf is a residential school that provides elementary, middle and high school programs for students between the ages of 3 (three) and 22 (twenty-two) for deaf and hard-of-hearing students from 46 of North Carolina's 100 counties. These students are from varying backgrounds and many have additional special circumstances. North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates on a regular academic year, Sunday afternoon through Friday at 1:00pm.



Support services and administration operate year-round.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies



Basic knowledge of child development



Knowledge and understanding of the needs, problems, and attitudes of handicapped or disadvantaged persons, and/or those with other disabilities.



General knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic, and the ability to assist teachers in conveying this knowledge to students/children or adults in the program.



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience working with students in an educational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
