Job description: Job Summary
Reporting to the Head Football Coach, the Academic Development Coordinator performs duties under general supervision and takes work lead direction from the Assistant AD for Football Operations to achieve specified outcomes. The Academic Development Coordinator will act as the liaison with coaches and support staff related to cohesive tutoring, peer mentoring and academic support programs for student-athletes by utilizing technology and strengthening connections/relationships with SARC team. The Academic Development Coordinator will ensure that student-athletes on academic probation, IEP, and/or engaged in academic support have their learning needs met throughout the academic year, by connecting student-athletes to the services provided by the SARC team. The Academic Development Coordinator will collaborate with SARC to ensure effective communication occurs and is consistent with graduation, eligibility, and APR tracking. Further, this position coordinates student success programming, specifically related to initial arrival to campus, and prepares a variety of reports and analyzes data for coaches in collaboration with the Assistant Athletic Director for Football. This position will aid in the student-athlete recruitment process, which requires a high level of skill in customer service, presentations, marketing of SJSU, and creating a team-oriented environment for students and their families.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate with SARC study hall hours for all assigned student-athletes and coordinate study hall fulfillment with campus protocols for students on academic probation
- Coordinate former students returning process for those seeking reentry following academic suspension
- Coordinate the process of registration and completion of winter or summer class for eligibility (in collaboration with SARC)
- Coordinate process of implementation of IEP for incoming and current student-athletes
- Coordinate with SARC to assess holds on accounts and communicate with students and coaches
- Coordinate with SARC to receive timely updates regarding academic progress and eligibility; provides updates to coaches daily
- Assists students in their educational progress, exploring service, leadership and extracurricular opportunities, and setting goals
- Review reports from faculty, mentors, and tutors regarding students' academic progress, class attendance and any grade/academic concerns or at-risk alerts.
- Collaborate with SARC to arrange academic support, mentoring, and tutoring, focused on student-athlete progress toward degree
- Coordinate individual and group tutorial/study sessions throughout the academic year (including winter and summer sessions)
- Ensure all student-athletes obtain all necessary books and supplies, assessing specific class or individual needs or deficiencies prior to each semester
- Partner with SARC to create curriculum for summer/winter entrance to San Jose State; helping to adjust to life as college athlete, including citing, SJSU websites, book pickups, and student portals
- Participate in prospective student-athletes campus visit, through meetings with parents and recruits and is responsible for developing compelling documentation of the programming provided for student success
- Ability to acquire knowledge of organizational procedures and activities of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the campus as a whole
- Ability to analyze data accurately and adopt effective course of action
- Ability to carry out a variety of complex assignments without detailed instructions by the Work Lead
- Knowledge of NCAA legislation, rules and regulations, especially as they apply to academic support
- Demonstrated ability to create student development and study skill programming
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver appropriate learning support strategies
- Ability to work as a team collaboratively
- General knowledge of university methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
- General working knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of Division I higher education and academic support
- Demonstrated ability to create programs that are responsive to a diverse and multicultural environment
- Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques
- Demonstrated ability to organize and evaluate academic plans
- Knowledge and understanding of the various technology platforms used in the University's online, technology-based learning environments
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related; A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience; A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling
- Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience
- Master's degree and/or teaching credential
- Two years of experience specifically in the academic support of two or four-year college students (Master's Degree or Teaching Credential count towards 1 year of experience)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,084/month - $5,356/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,025/month - $7,159/month
