Reports to: Direction is received from the Dean of Mathematics and Sciences.
Closely Partnered with: Life Sciences Faculty and Dean of Nursing and Allied Health

Job Summary
The Biology (BIO185/274) Retention Specialist is responsible for providing targeted support for students currently enrolled in BIO185 Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology and/or BIO274 Microbiology. The BIO185/274 Retention Specialist will promote and cultivate a problem-solving approach to support students in successful completion of BIO185 and/or BIO274. The BIO185/274 Retention Specialist will act as a mentor, learning coach, and key resource person for students enrolled in BIO185/274. The Retention Specialist will be provided office space in the JCSM building, an up-to-date instructor syllabus from each instructor, and a copy of the current text for each class.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Assist and collaborate in the development and management of comprehensive programming designed to increase student retention, including but not limited to:
  • Development of time management skills
  • Refine note taking skills
  • Effective study skills and methods of studying
  • How to use a textbook as a resource
  • How to navigate online learning platforms (Eagle, McGraw-Hill Connect, etc.)
  • Develop and execute ongoing mentoring activities using Math and Sciences Division and college-wide resources.
  • Support students via scheduled face-to-face and online/virtual appoints, drop-in visits, timely email correspondence.
  • Hours of availability should extend to 6pm twice a week.
  • Hours of availability should begin before 12pm noon twice a week.
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Communicate with faculty about recommended students who may be at risk for DWFI.
  • Meet with each faculty member teaching the courses of interest within the first three weeks of each term to discuss course layout, receive syllabi, and discuss student assessment in the course.
  • Receive information from instructors regarding students at risk for DWFI and below grade C (80%) and reach out to schedule a meeting with each student recommended by the instructor.
  • Provide a record of student visitations and topics covered to each instructor on or around the first of each month with the previous month?s data.
  • Collect and interpret qualitative and quantitative data to track student performance and retention and report the data to the instructor within 1 week of the end of the semester.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Math and Sciences Division and campus resources and be able to connect students appropriately. Follow up with students about the use of campus resources if appropriate and maintain a database of resources used.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor?s degree in one of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Health Sciences, Teaching, or other closely related fields.
  • Preferred qualifications: teaching or tutoring experience and familiarity with Biology Education Research/SABER (Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research)
