DEFINITION

Uses knowledge of English and Samoan to provide assistance to certificated staff in academic instruction and language proficiency assessment of students identified as English learners; and performs a variety of related services requiring skills in English and the designated language.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives supervision from a manager at or above the level of Coordinator. Receives technical instructions from a teacher or other certificated staff member.

Exercises no supervision.

Examples of Duties

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Tutors students identified as English learners to improve their proficiency in English and their understanding of curriculum subjects. Assists assigned students with problems related to school achievement as a result of language barriers. Promotes the well being of students by helping them develop a positive attitude/self image and an ability to cooperatively play and interact with other students and adults. Corrects homework assignments and class exercises. Maintains records of grades and student progress. Consults with teacher on ways of better meeting students' needs. Performs related tasks as required in program planning, implementation, and operation regarding assigned students. Serves as interpreter as needed and translates notices of various kinds sent home to parents of English learners. Administers oral language proficiency and academic tests in English and designated language to students. Transcribes oral answers into written form using state-and District-approved tests. Contacts school staff and parents to explain meaning of test scores obtained. Collects, corrects, scores, and tabulates assessment tests. Coordinates testing schedules and activities with teachers and students. Tests students on a one-to-one basis. Verifies student cumulative record information. Receives, sorts, arranges, alphabetizes, and files materials related to student testing. Posts, maintains, and updates testing data. Provides assistance to staff compiling reports. May travel from one work location to another, using personal transportation. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience and Education/Training (These are the minimum experience and education/training standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for examination, as approved on June 25, 1997.)

Any combination of the following paid experience amounting to one year: providing instructional assistance to a credentialed teacher, tutoring students, providing interpreting or translating services, or administering language proficiency tests and assessments.

High school graduation or the equivalent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Certain positions in this classification require personal transportation for travel to work sites, valid California driver's license, and auto liability insurance.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 32. Positions in this class work 6 hours 9 months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION: Qualified applicants will be notified of the time and place of the examination.
Assessment examination. WEIGHT: Pass/Fail. (This requirement can be met by one of the following: Completion of at least 48 semester units (or 72 quarter units) at the college level,
-OR- Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, -OR- Pass the Assessment Examination). Written examination. WEIGHT: 100%
