Job description: Viterbo University is accepting applications for a Reading/Writing Specialist and SSS/TRIO Academic Advisor for the Academic Resource Center. This is a 9-month (off in the summer), full-time, benefit eligible, 70% grant-funded, administrative (non-faculty) position. The Reading/Writing Specialist and SSS/ TRIO Advisor serves as a reading and writing resource to students across campus and as an academic advisor to students in the Student Support Services program. The Reading Writing Specialist reports to the Director of the Academic Resource Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Tutor students on all aspects of writing and in all stages of the writing process
  • Provide tutoring for students who seek to improve reading effectiveness
  • Develop and conduct workshops about the reading and the writing process
  • Maintain the Academic Resource Center undergraduate writing webpage
  • Visit classes to promote the services of the Academic Resource Center
  • Collaborate with academic departments across campus
  • Collaborate with the Education and Social Work Departments to help students achieve program writing requirements through writing contracts
  • Evaluate writing placement tests when requested
  • Provide tutoring for the writing portion of entrance exams for graduate/professional school
  • Serve as academic counselor to designated program students by evaluating their academic needs, coordinating an academic plan for success, and referring them to other resources when necessary
  • Participate in the development of activities and initiatives related to the Student Support Services program
  • Serve on appointed and elected university committees, and attend Administrative Assembly meetings throughout the year
  • Serve as member of Academic Resource Center team and promote the services of the Academic Resource Center
  • Maintain accurate records at all times
  • Carry out other responsibilities as delegated or assigned by the Director of the Academic Resource Center
General Requirements/Qualifications: Master's degree in English or a related field preferred. Experience working with college students. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a department that requires adaptability to changing academic needs. Excellent written and communication skills. Organization and detail in record keeping. Priority is given to applicants who indicate they are first generation. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
