Job Focus Areas

This Education Deputy Advisor is located within the Office of Teaching and Learning and reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent. This position will serve as the Director of Teaching and Learning Support Services supporting the Assistant Superintendent with program specific projects (including tracking, monitoring, and budgeting) to ensure successful implementation and scaling of program initiatives across all divisions in the Office of Teaching and Learning. This position is responsible for overseeing and managing communicating with school systems, scaling statewide programs, goal setting, monitoring, tracking progress, and ensuring alignment between priorities and funding needs across all of the Teaching and Learning Divisions.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assists and serves as principal assistant to the Assistant Superintendent in directing the work activities of all state educational authority (SEA) and local educational authority (LEA) educational programs within the Office of Teaching and Learning.
  • Supports the Assistant Superintendent, Division Directors, contractor/subcontractors, and other departments across the agency with high-level policy, research, and design recommendations relative to Teaching and Learning.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent for departmental budget revisions in matters related to personnel services, equipment, materials, and capital outlay for the office, performance indicators, and operational plans.
  • Coordinates the alignment of program initiatives and funding through grant application processes, such as Super App, which combines the agency's competitive and formula awards to schools into a single annual application process.
  • Conducts research and special projects and assures implementation of programs developed and initiated by the office;
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent.

**Note regarding the advertised pay range: The Education Consultant series has an established special entrance rate and is the advertised minimum. The maximum amounts listed are the maximum salary amounts a person can make at each level over their career and not the maximum amount we are allowed to pay a new hire.

One position is available and it is located in Baton Rouge, LA. The person hired for this position is expected to regularly report to the Baton Rouge office. This position may be filled by promotion of a current permanent classified employee of the Louisiana Department of Education only.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any of the following will qualify:

1. A baccalaureate degree plus six years of professional level experience in teaching or education; or in a public or private sector setting.

2. A master's degree plus five years of professional level experience in teaching or education; or in a public or private sector setting.

3. A master's degree in education plus four years of professional level experience in teaching or education; or in a public or private sector setting.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

A master's degree plus thirty graduate hours will substitute for one year of the required experience.

An Educational Specialist Degree will substitute for one year of the required experience.

A Ph.D. or Ed. D will substitute for two years of the required experience.

NOTE:

Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To serve as the deputy to an Assistant Superintendent or other equivalent cabinet-level unclassified executive.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Administrator.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Administrative direction from an Assistant Superintendent or other equivalent cabinet-level unclassified executive.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Functional supervision as designated by the unclassified executive over lower-level staff and programs under the jurisdiction of the office served and/or programs that cross office and programmatic lines.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Predominantly located at the Department of Education. Other locations may be approved by SCS.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from lower-level Education Consultant jobs by the presence of broad administrative responsibility or executive office programmatic responsibility and by serving as a deputy to an Assistant Superintendent or other equivalent level unclassified executive.

Differs from the Education Division Director by the absence of direct line supervision over Education Consultant Supervisor and related staff.

Assists and serves as principal assistant to an unclassified executive in directing the work activities of all state educational authority (SEA) and local educational authority (LEA) educational programs.

Meets with high-level state and local officials on matters relating to the department and may represent the superintendent or deputy superintendent at meetings, conferences, etc.

Reviews and makes recommendations to the unclassified executive for departmental budget revisions in matters related to personnel services, equipment, materials and capital outlay for the office, performance indicators, and operational plans.

Prepares responses for the unclassified executive on complex and sensitive matters affecting the office and the department, such as audit resolutions, compliance issues, and resolving complaints, as well as to direct the preparation of special academic and nonacademic reports relating to the office and the department.

Oversees educational program data collection, evaluation, and analysis.
