Job description: Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program: Compass Family Shelter provides homeless families with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room, and access to a kitchen, children's play area, and other communal spaces. While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them stabilize, find housing, and address challenges that contributed to their homelessness.

Schedule: Full time, Tuesday - Saturday. Hours are 9:30am - 5:30pm every day except Wednesdays, when hours are 10am - 6pm. Occasional evening work depending on shelter events and during holidays.

Salary range: $26 - $29 per hour

Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement an afterschool and weekend enrichment program for children and families staying at Compass Family Shelter. Activities include field trips, cultural and recreational experiences, art projects, and on-site events.
  • Generate a monthly calendar of children's programming and distribute to clients and staff.
  • Plan and implement holiday celebrations and activities for shelter children.
  • Plan and implement additional outings and activities during school vacations.
  • Provide informal counseling and emotional support to children, youth and families in shelter, as well as offer respite to parents.
  • Make collateral contacts with schools, Child Protective Services, and other outside agencies for the purposes of gathering and/or giving information.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers and interns for child and family programming.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Coordinator, conduct child assessments using ACEs tool; meet with parents to develop intervention plan.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Coordinator, lead parent and child groups and support weekly community meetings for shelter residents.
  • Implement and oversee children's activities during weekly community meetings.
  • Coordinate tutors and tutoring services for shelter children.
  • Oversee and coordinate with independent contractors for children's program.
  • Serve as liaison between Compass and SFUSD's Students And Families Experiencing Homelessness (SAFEH) program, including ordering school uniforms for shelter children and assisting with school enrollment.
  • Attend monthly SAFEH program meetings and participate in other relevant child-focused community forums.
  • Enter client participation data into CoDa ? Compass's Salesforce database and provide information for grant reports and requests.
  • Assist with monitoring of community space and enforcing shelter rules.
Qualifications:
  • Fluent or highly proficient Spanish required
  • Two years of experience working with at-risk children, preferably in a classroom or enrichment program environment
  • Strong knowledge of child development
  • Patient and nurturing while able to set appropriate limits
  • Understanding of trauma informed care and ability to implement trauma informed practices
  • Understanding of issues facing homeless families
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work
  • Competence in basic computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, internet)
  • Must be able to lift a child of 30 lbs.
  • TB and fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index)
Location & Covid Considerations:
  • Work location: 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco
  • After their first 90 days, staff have the option to work from home one day per week
  • Covid vaccination required for all staff, including booster
