About the Department
The 4-H Youth Development program provides the leadership for teaching, research, and delivery of youth programs in North Carolina, within the context of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Essential Job Duties
The Extension Associate (NC 4-H Camping Specialist) essential job duties include management of overall operations of the North Carolina 4-H Camps and Conference Centers, including but not limited to, programmatic, human resources, budgeting, and fiscal sustainability and facilities functions. This position is responsible for overall success for each 4H Center, each with a customized operation, audience, budget, facility and locations. Individual expected to guide Centers and their respective Directors with strategic planning, managing resources and solution and programmatic implementation. Position responsible for overall culture and performance management. Position is a leadership position and expected to have ability to lead small and large teams and influence others in formal and informal settings. Position will provide programmatic guidance and at times, lead and facilitate camp training.
Skills, experiences and expectations sought include:
- Success with budgeting, financial planning and analysis, fiscal and human resource management and accounting skills.
- Success in enterprise management including skills related to fee and cost analysis for multiple camping facilities and programs.
- Demonstrated proficiency with use of computer technology for financial planning, human resources, management and analysis including but not limited to PeopleSoft, Microsoft 360, and Google Suite.
- Strategic planning and implementation success for new construction and preventative facility maintenance.
- Strategic planning and successful implementation of plans and strategies for high quality youth camping programs to meet the evolving needs of families, youth and youth development professionals in NC 4-H.
- Leadership and management skills with direct reports in off-campus locations (camp directors and staff) to ensure business and programmatic goals are determined and met, and that budget projections are achieved and/or exceeded.
- Leadership skills for managing and facilitating large and small groups including but limited to the NC 4-H Camps team including Center Directors, Program Directors, the NC 4-H Camps Extension Assistant, seasonal staff and facilities and kitchen staff at each center.
- Successful Management experiences with facilities, infrastructure and properties.
- Innovative and entrepreneurial skills to optimize programmatic outcomes and revenue streams for the existing properties and facilities.
- Experience administering youth safety compliance policies and procedures to assure safe, inclusive, and healthy camping experiences for all youth.
- Ability to lead and facilitate camp and educational programs with youth including but not limited to team building, environmental education, and/or recreation programs.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master's degree in Parks & Recreation, Youth Development, Human Development, Education, Business Management or similar field.
- Successful experience in human and financial management related to the operation of camps, conference centers or similar areas of work.
- Applicant must have demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
- Strong effective written and verbal communication skills.
- A commitment to varying background and the ability to work effectively with, and through others.
- Must be flexible, highly motivated and have ability to function with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to successfully interface with College and University level administrators.
- Five or more years experience managing camps and conference centers with strong skills in human and financial management.
- Experience in a University setting, working with young people is desired.
- Additional experience in marketing, proposal development and managing grants is highly desired.
- Valid NC driver's license required within 60 days of hire.
