Job description: ABOUT OUR JOB



The City of Vacaville is currently recruiting to fill vacancies for Preschool Instructors - Recreation Specialist III's within the Parks & Recreation Department. Preschool instructors use various teaching methods and techniques like storytelling, games, music and art to teach kids basic social skills and learning concepts. Preschool instructors are also responsible for demonstrating how students should follow rules and respect others.



Examples of duties:



  • Establish and enforce rules of behavior for children in their classrooms.

  • Provide basic needs for children.

  • Provide tools and resources for children to use and explore during learning and play activities.

  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of children.

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with children and parents.

  • Manage classroom activities including lessons, play, and breaks.

  • Maintain a clean and tidy classroom.

  • Help children reach developmental milestones.

  • Encourage children to interact with each other to develop social skills.

  • Provide appropriate supervision for children at all times.

  • Maintain inventory system for classroom materials and supplies.

  • Adhere to health/safety and sanitation procedures.

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month. Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits, and do not accrue leave time with the exception of State-mandated sick leave (24 hours per year).



ABOUT YOU



The ideal candidate will have:

  • Ability to develop activities that are fun and educational for young children.

  • Ability to instruct young children in rules of conduct and learning new tasks.

  • Ability to adapt to children's learning styles.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with children and parents.

  • Proficient active listening skills to understand and adapt to the various needs of children and parents.

  • Patience and compassion suitable for working with young children.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma and twelve (12) semester units from an accredited college or university. College-level coursework is preferred in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or Psychology.



Experience: Equivalent of two (2) years of work experience performing increasingly responsible duties in a position equivalent to a Recreation Specialist II and one (1) year of work experience in a leadership capacity in a related youth-oriented or classroom environment is required.



License or Certificate:

Select positions may require the possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment. Must be at least 18 years of age if required to drive vehicles for City business.
