Oak Park and River Forest High School, or OPRF, is a comprehensive public high school located in Oak Park, Ill., a suburb eight miles due west of downtown Chicago. We are a one-school district, with the majority of our students coming from two sender districts, River Forest Public Schools District 90 and Oak Park Elementary School District 97. We offer more than 200 courses, a variety of programs for students with special needs, 75 clubs and activities, and 29 competitive sports. We prepare our students well for post-secondary success, with an average ACT composite score of 24 and a 94% graduation rate.

Position Summary:
The Music Director for the Oak Park and River Forest High School is part of the artistic team of the production. We are looking for a creative Music Director to be responsible for running rehearsals, teaching all vocal and instrumental music for the production as well as conducting the orchestra pit during performances. Your work will play a tremendous part in telling the story and enhancing the overall performance. This person will work with the director and artistic team to create the best vision for the production. Looking for a collaborative teacher/leader who will work well with both students and adults.

Qualifications: * Experience leading or teaching a diverse group of students
  • Proven experience in theatrical musical direction
  • Musical expertise both vocal and instrumental
  • Ability to recruit, teach, mentor and work with student actors and musicians
  • Understanding of a range of styles and cultural/historical elements of the music of the production
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Creativity and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with director and production staff
  • Organized with positive attitude
  • Ability to meet sponsor expectations as stated in Student Activities Sponsor Handbook
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Attending and contributing to production meetings ahead of auditions.
  • Auditioning the singers and making casting recommendations to the director.
  • Scheduling music rehearsals in collaboration with the director, choreographer and stage manager.
  • Teaching the cast members and orchestra their music.
  • Leading music rehearsals for principals, chorus and orchestra.
  • Supporting, attending and contributing to full cast rehearsals.
  • Serving as conductor for tech week and production.
  • In consultation with the director, selecting student orchestra members and rehearsal accompanist.
  • Working with the sound designer to coordinate microphone use and sound levels for balance.
  • Studying script and music to understand music requirements in terms of setting, era and character attributes.
  • Running sitzprobe rehearsal.
  • Supervising responsibilities of students in the Green Room, rehearsal spaces and performance spaces.
  • Setting up and breaking down of orchestra pit instruments and set up with the musicians.
  • Responsibility to return all music and script materials back to the publisher promptly at the conclusion of the production.
  • Attending Sponsor Meetings and meet expectations given by the Student Activities Director.
