Job description: General Job Description: The Safety/Security Officer (SSO) provides overall support with regard to the safety and security of a school site. The SSO supports school administration and the school safety team in creating and implementing the school safety plan that includes the Standard Repose Protocol (SRP). The SSO works to de-escalate situations that occur at school sites with students, and places importance on safety of all students and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Patrols school facilities on foot and with the use of vehicles;
  • Assists in the enforcement of school rules and regulations;
  • Assists in the supervision of crowds at spectator events;
  • Assists with searches;
  • Monitors and directs traffic in and out of school grounds to city streets;
  • Utilizes protocols, and actively supports school site administration in school site visitor processes;
  • Monitors student activities on campus;
  • Provides security in parking lots;
  • Works closely with law enforcement and emergency services providers;
  • Provides first aid/DeFib to injured persons when certified;
  • Supports with school site drills as directed by the school administration;
  • Implements open/close procedures as directed and required;
  • Opens and secures gates and doorways as required;
  • Complies with state-approved New Mexico Administrative Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession and upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations;
  • Performs other related functions as directed by Security Coordinator and/or lead or school principal/designee. Employee may be assigned other duties based on the needs of the district during the term of employment.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage time appropriately
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of incidents
  • Support with internal investigations as directed
  • Attend and participate in professional meetings, training workshops, and development as required.
  • Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Actively and appropriately participates and collaborates in school teams/committees
  • Support district initiatives
  • Demonstrate public relations skills
  • Use and apply appropriate conflict resolution skills
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect
  • Complete Safe Schools training as directed by the District.
  • Act as a good role model within the context of the school
  • Follow district and school procedures
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the principal
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • Current New Mexico driver?s license is required
  • Previous experience as a security officer and/or law enforcement officer is required
  • Previously (or currently) certified as a New Mexico Law Enforcement officer is preferred
  • Certified in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), Standard Response Protocol (SRP), NIMS, ICS, and/or CPR is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal communications techniques;
  • Knowledge of applicable school rules and district policies;
  • Knowledge of Security Guidelines;
  • Participate in CPI training and recertification;
  • Collect and analyze information and to make independent judgments;
  • Maintain effective relationships with staff, students, and law enforcement, and public safety agencies;
  • Use standard communications equipment.(radios, phone, computer, PDA);
  • Operate district-owned vehicles;
  • Patrol school facilities on foot, bicycles, golf carts, ATVs, and vehicles; ?
  • Understands and effectively utilizes SRP, NIMS, and ICS
  • Direct traffic flow in and out of school property.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired. The following may be required: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to extremely heavy carrying, lifting, and pushing; reaching, climbing in high, precarious places, crawling, sitting, kneeling, standing and walking for extended periods of time; operation of motor vehicles; and subject to random drug testing.

Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.

Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air
quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hour work may be required.

Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.

All GMCS schools are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
