Job description: The Arthur J. Morris Law Library at the University of Virginia School of Law is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated individual to join its team as a Technical Services Assistant. This position will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and accessibility of the Law Library?s extensive collection of physical and online legal resources.

The Technical Services Assistant will perform various tasks related to cataloging, acquisitions, and collection maintenance. Primary responsibilities include:

Copy Cataloging and Metadata Creation: Using established library cataloging standards (MARC21, RDA) and classification systems (LC classification, LCSH), create, enhance, and maintain metadata for library materials in various formats, including books, journals, microforms, databases, and other digital resources, in the integrated library system (ILS) as well as internal online resource data.

Digital Resource Access Support: Maintain proper linkage between physical and electronic resources in the library's integrated library system (ILS), website, and internal records.

Acquisitions Support: Assist in the acquisitions process by receiving and processing new materials both print and digital, while maintaining accurate records, collecting and organizing usage statistics, and coordinating with vendors as needed.

Other duties include preparing books for binding, book repair, maintaining authority control records, processing new materials for the physical collection, and shelf reading.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

At least two years of experience in a library. Experience in a non-library environment that is analogous to library technical services responsibilities, e.g., maintenance of database records, inventory control, or similar, may be considered in lieu of experience in a library.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Ability to effectively use integrated library systems (ILS), library management software, and office computing software such as spreadsheets, word processing, and email applications, and the flexibility to adapt workflows to incorporate new technologies.

Effective written and verbal communication skills, a customer-focused attitude, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working in a technical services role within an academic or law library.

Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in libraries.

Familiarity with library cataloging standards (MARC21, RDA) and classification systems (LC classification, LCSH).

Familiarity with legal research materials and resources.

Knowledge of metadata standards and emerging trends in library technology.

Proficiency in using library software such as OCLC Connexion, SirsiDynix Symphony/WorkFlows, or similar systems.

This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy. This is a full-time University Managerial and Professional Staff position with .
