Position Summary

The Program for Intensive English (PIE) in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI invites applicants for a Lecturer of Intensive English/ESL. This ten-month, renewable, non-tenure track appointment begins August 1, 2024. This position is benefits-eligible with the opportunity for promotion. MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or closely related field with TESOL Certificate with experience teaching ESL at the post-secondary level, preferably including at least two years teaching in an IEP. IUPUI welcomes applications from candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity.

The PIE lecturer will teach up to 20 hours per week during each 8-week session and help with student orientation, testing, placements, and final evaluations at the beginning and end of each session. Classes meet 5 days per week between 8:00am - 5:00pm. For sessions when teaching fewer than 20 hours per week, s/he will help with special projects, program administration, and/or associate faculty/graduate student mentoring, as assigned. Summer teaching may be available under separate appointment.

The PIE, established in 2015, provides an intensive English program especially designed for students who are preparing to enter a college or university in the United States. In the classroom, students learn English via a multi-skills approach, with classes in listening/speaking, reading/writing and grammar each day.

PIE faculty are expected to maintain a clear understanding of the program's curricular objectives and instructional expectations; plan and implement lessons that are engaging, productive and challenging; participate in program administrative functions including placement & proficiency testing and orientation responsibilities; mentor and support other teachers and graduate students; and engage in ongoing professional development activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach up to 20 contact hours per week per 8-week session. Courses are currently all in person on the IUPUI campus. Teaching includes planning, preparing, and delivering academic English instruction in all skill areas and at multiple levels. The instruction will be consistent with established instructional goals for each skill/level and delivered in coordination with colleagues.
  • Use innovative approaches to teaching that follow best practices and current research in second language acquisition, experiential- and project-based learning, content-based learning, and instructional technology.
  • Participate actively in student orientation, placement testing and student assessment, PIE activities, and faculty meetings and workshops.
  • Provide service and leadership to the PIE through committees and projects.
  • Engage in professional development activities such as presenting at conferences, observing colleagues, and leading in-service trainings.

Basic Qualifications
  • MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or closely related field with TESOL Certificate.
  • Experience teaching in post-secondary ESL programs, with at least two years teaching in an IEP
  • Advanced proficiency in English.
  • Evidence of ability to teach all proficiency levels and language skills, including classes with combined proficiency levels.
  • Demonstrated passion for teaching non-native speakers of English.

  • Experience in communicative language teaching methodology, integrating language skills through task-based learning, performance-based assessment techniques, and proficiency in using technology (including course-management systems like CANVAS) as an integrated component of classroom instruction.

  • Experience with community-based learning activities.
  • Experience with, or at least clear interest in, teaching online.
  • Experience living and teaching overseas.
