Overview

Within the context of a trauma informed, sanctuary, and operating from a strength-based perspective, the Fair Futures College & Career Specialist/Supervisor will oversee up to two Fair Coaches and Tutor in their work with young people by providing guidance and ongoing direction to help participants achieve academic and career success. The delivery of services is to be consistent with Fair Future, Good Shepherd Services? philosophy, and city and state mandates.

Hours: 35 Hours/Week; Exempt; Flexible Hours

Major Duties:
  • Supervise a team of (5) Fair Futures Coaches across various Good Shepherd Services Residential Programs in New York City.
  • Provide a minimum of weekly supervision to ensure that the educational, employment and vocational needs of participants are being met.
  • Work closely with The Fair Futures Educational and Permanency Specialists.
  • Check in with Residential Program leadership on site.
  • Review documentation in advance (including any progress notes, new academic data, and goals/steps completed over the last week).
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team to implement procedure and process to promote accessibility to career and educational services that would enhance employment opportunities for participants.
  • Create and maintain community resources to serve as a conduit to career and educational opportunities, including linkages with vocational/educational agencies such as ACS, ACCES-VR, NADAP, One-Stop, DYCD, etc.
  • Plan and execute fair future events by organizing vocational, employment/educational recruitment and college tours.
  • Guide Coaches to utilize motivational interviewing to create an individualized Ed/Voc/Career plan to support participants skills, goals, and interest.
  • Assist Coach with facilitating Preparing Youth for Adulthood (PYA) groups, which focus on skills, such as: healthy communication, employment process, college application process, positive peer relationships, making positive choices, and service learning.
  • Assist Coach with identifying potential longer-term career pathways based on the participant?s interests, strengths, and academic/vocational plans.
  • Participate in trainings/ department meetings, Program Evaluation and Planning Dept (PEP) in fulfillment of the program evaluation processes, including documentation/collection, development and monitoring of program data in Connections and outcomes.
  • Promote and model the seven Sanctuary Model commitments to create a nonviolent and trauma sensitive culture.
  • Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment.
  • Ensure Coach has appropriate external support and supplies necessary to effectively execute tasks.
  • Assist with developing program activities to explore career, educational pathways and workshops to keep participants engaged during the employment search process.
  • Track and ensure that young people are attaining employment, training, educational and internship opportunities.
  • Ensure that organizational expectations for placement and retention of young people in jobs, internships, and training are met on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
  • Help Coaches navigate the DOE, academic and career development goal-setting process,
  • Facilitate and assist with the submission of financial aid, ETV, ACS Dorm Project/Foster Care Room & Board, & all applicable scholarships including reviewing reference letters and college essays.
  • Assist participants with writing college essays and personal statements where needed.
  • Ensure participants are signed up for any entrance interviews/exams and apply to eligible opportunity programs (Upward Bound, etc.); Monitor Pre-SAT/SAT scores of those participants who do take them, and meet with them to discuss/refine college options.
  • Meet with participants interested in college to have an exploratory and informational session, after they are referred by their Coach, and discuss/develop individualized success plan to complete identified high school or HSE program
  • Establish contact with participants in college to ensure they are enrolled in the proper classes each semester, and assist with enrollment, if needed.
  • Assist young people with creating/updating resume and cover letter as needed.
  • Facilitate family Team Conferences when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor?s degree in, human services, workforce development, social work, and/education required with a minimum of five years? experience within supervisory capacity. Masters in social work and education strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of proven excellence in leadership, curriculum development, and presentation skills.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to maintain required documentation.
  • Must be able to use public transportation systems, including subways and busses to attend various meetings and make home visits.
  • Must be physically able to observe staff in their relationship with residents, be able to climb stairs when an elevator is not available.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength based and/or youth development perspective.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of Connections and Microsoft Suite.
  • Must have ability to work a flexible schedule when needed including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must have a commitment to GSS models of practice including Sanctuary and ACS principles to promote permanency, safety, and well-being.
