The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah Tech University (UT) in St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Spanish, starting Fall Semester 2024. The goal of the UT Spanish program is to prepare students for 21st century jobs by focusing on the skills that employers prioritize, including effective oral and written communication, critical thinking, collaborative teamwork, and sophisticated analytical skills. Responsibilities
- Teach a combination of 24 credits of Spanish courses per academic year, including lower and upper division courses plus the equivalent of three credit hours or more in institutional service as defined by the School of Humanities.
- Assist in developing the modern language curriculum.
- Assist in Study Abroad programs in Spain and Latin America (on a rotation with other professors).
- Assist in assessment process through the curriculum.
- Serve on college, division, and departmental committees as assigned.
- Advise students on general education and discipline specific requirements.
- Attend department, division and faculty meetings, work with other faculty in program management, and adhere to university policies.
- Develop and maintain a research agenda appropriate to a teaching university. UT values both scholarship of discovery and scholarship of pedagogy. Scholarship that involves student co-researchers and/or informs the candidate's teaching is especially valued.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Doctorate degree in Translation Studies (Spanish) and/or Spanish Literature with proven experience in Translation and Interpretation from an accredited college or university. ABD considered if the candidate has a defense date already set. Tenure-track status is dependent upon completion of the doctoral degree.
- Preference given to those candidates with a minimum of three years teaching Spanish at the college level.
- Demonstrated teaching skills in teaching a variety of courses including beginning, intermediate, advanced Spanish, Translation, Interpretation, Spanish for the professions, Dual Language Immersion (applicants selected for personal interview must demonstrate their teaching abilities in a classroom setting).
- Experience with curriculum development.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability in oral and written communication in both Spanish and English.
- An eagerness to engage with colleagues, staff, and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience of our students and help develop the modern language curriculum.
- Preference given to those candidates who have experience with Study Abroad programs in Spanish-speaking countries.
POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) tenure-track or professional-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2024, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2024. Annual salary of $58,000-$61,000, depending on qualifications & experience, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
