The Department of Education & Early Learning's (DEEL) mission is to ensure that all Seattle children have the greatest opportunity to succeed in school and in life, ultimately helping scholars graduate from school, ready for college, and a career. As part of this mission, DEEL is hosting the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and graduation. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
We are looking for two Tutors to support the Upward Bound Program in Seattle through the end of the academic school year. In this role, you will be responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th - 12th grade students enrolled in the program. You will work with the Academic Youth Counselor and Youth Instructors, mentoring students facing educational barriers to progress through the academic pipeline so they may succeed in high school and beyond. This position will provide you with the opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience in working with diverse youth from underserved communities.

Job Responsibilities
Here's what you'll be doing to support the Upward Bound program:
- Providing one-on-one and small group tutoring to 9th-12th grade students in Math, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), English, Spanish, or other foreign languages
- Supporting leadership development, college and career readiness, goal setting, career exploration, and life skills by developing and conducting workshops
- Maintaining accurate records of tutoring and workshop activities by students and volunteers
Experience:
- As a successful program participant in Upward Bound or a similar program so that you can support students in developing the skills and knowledge for success in achieving personal, postsecondary, and career goals
- Tutoring one-on-one and/or in small group settings, particularly in Math and Science, and mentoring in leadership development settings
- Working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds (either paid or as a volunteer)
- Proficiency in one or more of the following skill areas (with a priority on both Math and Scence): Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus), English (reading and writing), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), or foreign language
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to serving diverse families in the community
In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):
- An Associate's Degree
- Equivalent of two years of college-level coursework
These temporary overtime-eligible positions are classified as Youth Supervisor 1* and are expected to last through the academic school year. The pay rate for this step-progression position is $21.05 - $21.05 per hour. Tutoring will take place after school at Rainier or Garfield High School. The full time commitment is roughly 7 hours per week (2 - 4 hours per day, 2 days per week).
Individuals selected to fill this position may be eligible to receive Language Premium Pay (SMC 4.20.360), which provides a $200.00 monthly stipend to qualified bilingual employees who are properly evaluated and assigned to provide direct communication in-language, interpretation, or translation services to the public on behalf of the City of Seattle.
