Job description: Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified English Language Arts teacher who will be able to develop and sustain academic-focused instruction for his/her students in the subject of English Language Arts. The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement. The teacher will create an engaging, welcoming and positive classroom environment which stimulates achievement and growth. The teacher will develop student skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to student success across the curriculum. The teacher will build an appreciation of various types of literature within each student, creating life-long learners. The teacher will establish positive and respectful relationships with students, parents and colleagues.

DISTRICT OVERVIEW:

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 14,000 pre-K ? post secondary students. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. The annual budget for the Livonia Public Schools is in excess of $160 million, with state funding of $8,700 per pupil.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Superintendent in exercising the prerogative to determine appropriate qualifications.
  • Minimum of a bachelor?s degree in the area of English Language Arts
  • Valid Secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsements in Language Arts (BX) or English (BA). A major in the subject area is strongly preferred.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create a welcoming and positive classroom climate and culture.
  • Exhibit a commitment to the District?s Shared Vision and Collective Commitments.
  • Teach content and skills in ELA, literature, composition, and reading to secondary students, utilizing curriculum and instructional materials adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Adapt ELA materials and methods to develop engaging, relevant, sequential lessons and assignments that guide and challenge students.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students.
  • Integrate school improvement goals into the classroom.
  • Adapt the curriculum, instruction, and lessons to provide individual, small-group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student.
  • Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Evaluate each student?s progress in ELA skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe and productive classroom environment.
  • Maintain student classroom records using district provided electronic gradebook.
  • Identify student needs and work collaboratively with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting students.
  • Communicate with students, parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Administer and monitor group tests.
  • Participate in school improvement/AdvancEd accreditation initiatives at the district and school level, committees, and collaborative learning teams.
  • Execute other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by building administrator.

The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association. The deadline for applications is 4:00pm on September 7, 2023. This position will remain open until filled.
