The Music and Dance department and the Interdisciplinary Studies department invite applicants to apply for a full-time, temporary joint position beginning September 2024. We seek an artist-scholar to lead the option in Hip Hop Dance and to contribute to the university?s Race and Ethnic Studies curriculum.The position may be reappointed for up to two additional years subject to available funding, and with continued growth of the programs it is expected there may be additional tenure track lines in the departments.

The successful candidate?s home department will be Music and Dance. Courses taught may include hip hop dance technique, cyphering, hip hop dance history, choreography for the Salem Dance Ensemble and/or Hip Hop Dance Ensemble, and other courses in the candidate?s areas of expertise and program needs. Within the candidate?s collaborating department, Interdisciplinary Studies, teaching opportunities would help to expand and formally redesign the concentration in American Studies around the framework of ethnic studies and social justice. Regularly teaching one core course would be augmented by developing and teaching courses in the faculty?s area of expertise. At least one course per semester will be taught in Interdisciplinary Studies. Our departments have a strong commitment to the inclusion and engagement of our growing population of diverse students, and the institution as a whole is in the process of gaining recognition as an HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution).

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the . Duties include teaching, advising, and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • MFA in dance or terminal degree in a related field from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated expertise in hip hop dance
  • Experience in performing and/or choreographing in the professional dance field
  • Knowledge of current theories and methodologies in the fields of American Studies, Race and Ethnic Studies, and/or African-American Studies with teaching experience therein
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Commitment to anti-racist, culturally responsive teaching within a liberal arts environment in higher education
  • Administrative experience, strong organizational and writing skills
  • Advising and/or mentoring experience
