Title: Director of Bands, Associate or Full Professor of Music (Bands), tenured or tenure-track

Position Summary: The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music seeks candidates for the position of Director of Bands to provide artistic, strategic, and administrative leadership for the Department of Bands. In addition to ensemble conducting responsibilities, the Director of Bands will also lead the graduate wind conducting program, foster a national and international portfolio of conducting and teaching activity, and work with school leadership and band faculty to determine teaching and conducting responsibilities in their unit.

Expectations for this position include:
  • Cultivating a forward-thinking vision for the wind ensemble as an artistic and pedagogical medium
  • Engaging in featured performances and recording projects that showcase the Jacobs School of Music nationally and internationally
  • Recruiting and retaining top national and international wind conducting graduate students
  • Fostering collaborations with composers and performing artists both within and outside of the Jacobs School of Music
  • Maintaining a regional, national, and international profile as a guest conductor and clinician, including honor ensembles and conducting workshops
  • Collaborating with applied faculty to recruit talented musicians to the Jacobs School of Music
  • Teaching at the annual IU wind conducting workshop
  • Serving on Jacobs School of Music committees as assigned or requested
  • Collaborating with the Jacobs School of Music Business Office on the management of the Department of Bands budget and IU Foundation accounts
  • Developing new departmental courses as needed
Basic Qualifications: Master's degree in music or related field required. Doctorate in Wind Conducting preferred. Considerable experience as a full-time university wind band conductor required. Full-time high school band teaching experience preferred. An international profile of wind band conducting and scholarship/creativity preferred.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with experience. Rank at Associate or Full Professor (tenure track).
