The Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA) integrates curricular and co-curricular components to improve the academic performance of our students and the quality of academic and non-academic experiences at NC State University. DASA promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement and achievement for the student scholar. Led by Vice Chancellor and Dean Dr. Doneka Scott, DASA is committed to providing our students with the programs and services they need for progress toward scholastic objectives, intellectual development, and personal growth.
DASA is home to academic affairs, student affairs, and University College. DASA departments and programs serve all NC State students and partner closely with the other colleges and other campus units to support student success and engagement.
University College includes three departments: Department of Health and Exercise Studies, the Department of Performing Arts & Technology, and Exploratory Studies, 12 minors and two certificate programs. In addition, University College includes undergraduate courses and curricula, academic enrichment, advising technology, and university advising. University College is one of the largest generators of undergraduate student credit hours at NC State.
UC faculty and staff, often through collaboration with a broad range of campus partners, provide innovative experiential learning opportunities, centralized curricular and cross-curricular programs, academic support, and other resources that enhance the student learning experience. Timely degree completion and accomplishment of academic and career goals are fostered through interdisciplinary academic programs, academic planning and support, continuous faculty and staff development, and high impact educational practices.

The Department has a new major in Music Technology and also provides academic minors in Dance Studies, Dance Performance and Choreography, Music Studies, Music Performance, and Arts Entrepreneurship. Essential Job Duties
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (Dean, University College) with a secondary report to the Senior Associate Dean, the Department Head will provide visionary and innovative leadership to the Department of Performing Arts & Technology in University College. The department head will promote a collegial, supportive, and welcoming environment for all faculty, staff, and students (strong emphasis on student success), with a strong commitment to recruiting and retaining well-qualified faculty and to directing all academic, operational, and budgetary activities associated with departmental functions.
- As the Department of Performing Arts & Technology (DPA&T) leader, the head is responsible for HR and personnel issues within the department in consultation with DASA Human Resources.
- The department head will supervise and mentor approximately 21 full time faculty and 26 part time faculty and applied lecturers
- The department head is responsible for hiring and the renewal of faculty and staff and the annual evaluation of all direct reports, as well as the Statements of Faculty Responsibilities, assignment of courses and course support.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
- Maintains academic excellence by observing, mentoring, and collaborating with faculty.
- Ensures that the department is aligned with and implements college, division and university policies and practices.
- Maintains academic quality and departmental vitality through the oversight, recruitment, and retention of faculty, staff, and students. Actively works to ensure a welcoming environment that fosters belonging for all faculty, staff, and students.
- Ensures smooth daily operation of the departments faculty, staff, and physical facilities and schedules.
- Conducts DPA&T affairs in an orderly manner through regularly scheduled DPA&T meetings; keeping DPA&T members informed of actions in a timely fashion.
- Provides sustainable financial management of departmental finances, as well as physical and technological facilities, in consultation with the Vice Chancellor and Dean (VCD), the Sr. Associate Dean (SrAD), and DASA finance.
- Create and charge departmental committees and appoint the members.
- Oversees curriculum development and coordinates the department's schedule of course offerings.
- Through shared governance practices, seeks the input of the DPA&T faculty colleagues systematically in broad decision-making and planning.
- Conducts DPA&T affairs in an orderly manner through regularly scheduled DPA&T meetings; keeping DPA&T members informed of actions in a timely fashion.
- Communicates information concerning policies, decisions, procedures, and activities to the department.
- Fosters positive morale, cohesiveness, a collaborative culture, open communication and transparency throughout the department.
- Mentors and guides faculty to better mentor students, set scholarly goals, investigate creative interests within the field, and accomplish professional goals.
- Teaches at least one course per year
- The department head is a member of the senior leadership team for the division and for University College. As a member of the leadership team for UC, this position has a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Associate Dean, University College.
- Represents and advocates for the DPA&T at the college, division, and university levels.
- Engages in departmental development and fundraising opportunities for DPA&T initiatives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires doctoral degree, master of fine arts degree, or other terminal degree in music, dance, performing arts or related discipline.
- Eligible for appointment with tenure as associate or full professor in the Department of Performing Arts & Technology or other related academic department at NC State University.
- Minimum of 10 years of combined experience in teaching and administrative responsibilities at the collegiate level.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels of the university.
- Ability to create, maintain, analyze, and negotiate the department budget.
- Ability to analyze, anticipate, and schedule course offerings.
- Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.
- A demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff and students to develop a welcoming environment that fosters belonging.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate, form partnerships, and work effectively as a member of a goal-oriented department and division.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and facilitate growth experiences for faculty.
- Previous experience as a department head/chair at the college / university level or experience in supervisory / management position(s) in the academic arena, preferably at the collegiate level.
- Demonstrated ability to use and understand data to inform strategic planning and decision making.
- Strong evidence of ability to set operational goals from strategic plans and lead direct reports to accomplish these strategic goals and initiatives.
- Past experience in successfully managing change.
