Job description: Bering Strait School District is actively recruiting an Itinerant Speech and Language Pathologist for the 2023-2024 school year.

JOB DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE: This is a contract position. The contractor will provide Speech and Language services to the Bering Strait School District on a contracted basis during the 2023- 2024 school year. The primary objectives to be met for the school year are to conduct evaluations, screenings, and provide speech and language supervisory services and training as outlined in each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

QUALIFICATIONS: * Current Alaska Type C certificate with Speech Pathology endorsement.
  • Masters degree in Speech Pathology preferred.
  • Knowledge of areas of practice specific to pediatrics including familiarity with IDEA 2004 and current legal mandates, including: Federal and State law, compliance issues, and FERPA confidentiality requirements.
  • Pediatric and school therapist experience; preferred.
  • Skill in selecting and providing a wide range of intervention strategies and monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and provide training to school staff and parents as needed in a collaborative, consultant role.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Experience working with individuals from varied cultural backgrounds
  • Physical ability to execute job responsibilities which may include: extensive travel including the adaptability in being able to adjust to a variety of lodging and travel circumstances; carrying test and personal equipment on and off small planes (up to 50lbs.).
  • Experience in structuring individual education programs.
  • Experience in working with students limited in articulation, fluency, voice, hearing, and disorders of language.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and appropriate records.
  • Willingness to travel by air throughout the Bering Strait School District.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cross cultural setting.
JOB SUMMARY: Provide Responsible for Implementing services and working with children of various ages and a variety of disabilities (preschool to 12th grade). Position requires being an itinerant and traveling to different school sites within the district.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Provide for speech and language screenings.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports including: summary and interpretation of evaluation results; recommendation for eligibility for speech and language therapy services according to Alaska Special Education Handbook; summary of present levels, recommended activities for student progress; and suggested IEP goals and objectives, where appropriate.
  • Provide diagnostic evaluations, rescreening services, or further referrals for students referred for speech/language/hearing services and provide recommendations regarding placement if appropriate.
  • Provide a summary of present levels and recommended objectives for annual individual educational plans for each child receiving speech/language/hearing programs.
  • Provide continuous, ongoing consultation and training with the special education team and/or parents.
  • Provide continuous, ongoing training with the teaching staff and others who are involved with children in speech/language/hearing programs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services

SALARY: This is a contract position. The district will pay the contractor a daily rate of $750 each day. Note: One day is equivalent to 7.5 hours of service.

PERIOD COVERED: The contractor will provide 40 onsite days (4 two-week trips) and 16 office/off-site days, totaling 56 contracted days during the 2023-24 school year.

TRAVEL EXPENSES: The District will cover additional travel expenses which may incur to and from Anchorage up to $2000. The District will arrange and pay for travel from Anchorage to the District, as well as all in-district travel and lodging expenses. The District will reimburse the Contractor for cab fare expenses within Nome If necessary. The District Is not responsible for per diem reimbursements.The Contractor will be reimbursed the daily rate for any days weathered beyond the contract days and lodging will be provided by the District. All payments will be made at the end of the trip, within two weeks after receipt of student reports, report of service, Invoice and any third-party travel documentation. All paperwork shall be submitted to the Director of Student Services via email. Additionally, the District will purchase materials for the Contractor, which will become the property of the District. The Contractor will coordinate with the Director of Student Services to determine what materials are needed. The Contractor is not responsible for entering information in PowerSchool Special Education computer software and will only be required to make contact/write reports for the sites In which they are scheduled to visit.
