Job Summary



The Biology Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in community ecology. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning in fall 2024, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

About



Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, highly selective national liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. The Oberlin Department of Biology includes 9 full-time tenure-track faculty whose research and teaching specialties span the breadth of the biological sciences. The department graduates approximately 50 majors per year. Faculty in the department have their own individual research labs, receive competitive startup packages, and are expected to work closely with undergraduate students on original research projects.

Responsibilities



The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (4.5 courses per year) in the general area of community ecology. The expected teaching duties include a course in the First-Year Seminar Program as well as majors courses, including Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology (BIOL 200, which is required of all Biology majors) and ecology-related upper-level courses in the area of their expertise, with lab experiences desirable. The successful candidate will also engage in mentored research of undergraduates.



The incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on committees.

Qualifications



Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2024-25). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
