Job Summary



The College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks an accomplished choral conductor and pedagogue to provide artistic vision and guidance for a comprehensive choral program. This full-time faculty appointment will commence in August of 2024. Final rank to be determined based on the applicants prior teaching and conducting experience.

The College of Music offers seven degree programs in over 28 fields of study, at the bachelor's level through the doctorate. The choral department has a long history as one of the oldest units within the College of Music. The department was founded in 1938 by Warner Imig. In the 1960's, CU Boulder became one of the first universities in the nation to offer a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting. The College of Music currently offers both master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting. The College also offers comprehensive degree programs in Composition, Conducting, Jazz Studies, Music Education, Musicology, Performance, and Theory. CU Boulder is located in one of the most picturesque and desirable geographic locations in the country, within easy driving distance of a major metropolitan area and the Rocky Mountains.



What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be



The Director of Choral Activities will provide artistic and administrative leadership for all aspects of the choral department. The successful candidate will build upon the long-standing legacy of CU's choral program as well as develop an inspiring vision for its future that includes performances at regional and national conferences. We also desire a candidate who will work closely and collaboratively with the Associate Director of Choral Activities, and we seek a colleague who will prioritize the growth of the program, co-creating and cultivating an environment where students feel that they belong and can thrive. We also seek a colleague who will partner with the voice and conducting areas to strengthen relationships within the College of Music.



The successful candidate will teach courses in graduate choral conducting, choral literature, and conduct the CU Chamber Singers. They will also be engaged in active scholarship and conducting with national and international visibility. The ideal candidate will prioritize a mentorship role with graduate students, helping to guide DMA and MM students with their degree programs.



The department is comprised of four ensembles: Chamber Singers, University Choir, Festival Chorus, and Treble Chorus. The final assignment of duties will be based on the needs of the department and the expertise of the candidate.

  • Appointment begins August 21, 2024.

What We Can Offer



The annual salary range for this position is:



  • $77,000 - $89,500 for Associate Professor

  • $90,000 - $100,000 for Full Professor

What We Require



  • An earned doctorate in choral conducting, or master's degree with significant professional accomplishments and experience.

  • A minimum of six years as a teacher at the collegiate level.

  • An established record of excellence as a choral conductor and pedagogue.

  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in creative activity and research, teaching and service.

  • National/international recognition in creative activity and/or research and publications.

  • The ability to advise and support graduate students' research and dissertation projects

  • The ability to develop sustainable and equitable partnerships and/or collaborations with others within and outside of the university community.

  • Successful recruitment strategies for the choral program and the university.

We seek individuals who are versatile performers with proven success as a teacher at the collegiate level.



Additional expertise in one or more of the following areas:



  • Artistic and administrative direction of music festivals and large events.

  • Individual performance experience. Teaching experience outside the choral area.

  • Experience with digital media and teaching technologies.

  • Community and K-12 school engagement and outreach.

  • Performance or pedagogical experience with non-Western music and/or vernacular music.
