THE POSITION
Under the supervision of an administrator, performs a variety of instructional activities; assists in conducting intensified learning or physical education experiences for Individuals with Exceptional Needs (IWENs); performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel.
CURRENT OPENING: There are multiple part-time openings (10 months, 30 hours per week). Most of the opening requires the ability to be bilingual and biliterate in SPANISH. However, the same list may be used to fill additional or future vacancies for six months. Salary placement will be on Range 16 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B". Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($18.97 per hour) of this salary range.

Essential Duties
- Tutors individuals and small groups of students to reinforce progress in learning activities.
- Assists in the management and shaping of student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies.
- Directs students into safe activities and in the development of appropriate social behavior.
- Uses the curriculum lab.
- Assists teachers and other professional personnel with instructional and behavioral management activities and strategies with students experiencing interruptions of the learning process due to special needs.
- Assists in maintaining a neat, orderly and attractive learning environment.
- Assists in the development of a variety of instructional materials for use with individuals and small groups of students, or in activity centers.
- Assists in maintaining student records and files.
- Assists instructional personnel in the implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).
- Monitors and assists students through drill and practice activities.
- Operates a variety of instructional media, computers and office machines and equipment.
- Distributes and maintains inventory of textbooks, supplies and equipment.
- Administers and scores classroom tests.
- May at times perform diapering, changing soiled clothes due to incontinence and performs other duties as directed.
- Translates orally or in writing in a specified language other than English.
Employees in this classification speak clearly, walk, hear normal voice conversation, stand, sit, see small details, use a telephone and computer, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, color vision/distinguish shades, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted and over 50 lbs. with assistance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work primarily indoors, in direct contact with students, the public and other district staff, exposed to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.), exposed to sever contagious illnesses/disease (tuberculosis, measles, mumps, chicken pox, hepatitis, etc.), without guidance from supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires all paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance in a classroom to possess a high-school diploma or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent AND ONE of the following:
- A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework.
- An Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
- Pass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching, reading, writing and mathematics.
One year of paid or volunteer experience within an educational or child care setting, preferably serving special education students.
Physical Requirement:
Successfully complete a physical examination. Absence of back problems or any other physical impairments that might preclude the performance of physical labor or lifting.
Second Language Requirement:
Positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write a second language in addition to English, and require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277).
Ideal candidates will have

- Learn and utilize simple methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional setting.
- Perform simple clerical tasks and operate standard office machines and computers.
- Effectively utilize training received on the job.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted and over 50 lbs. with assistance.
- Tolerate strong odors.
- Work well with children.
COVID Vaccine Requirement
Per Board policy, employees are allowed on District campuses or facilities only if they are fully vaccinated. This resolution applies to all applicants upon hire. Applicants are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination status to the Personnel Commission Office on the date of the examination. Applicants will not be allowed to take the examination without being fully vaccinated. People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completion of two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
General Information
The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of an application screening, initial screening of qualifications, documentation/certification screening, and in some instances supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.
The examination may consist of any combination of the following: training and experience evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on the eligibility list, which depending on the classification, may be in force for six months or one year.
