Job Description
What You?ll Do
This position reports directly to the MAASE Executive Director and has primary management responsibility over training and development programming (ongoing and grant funded). This role is responsible for the formation and execution of the annual schedule of programs and events to achieve the Board approved strategic and financial priorities. It includes creation of the business plan for profitability and impact of MAASE programs, special events, and grant programs and is accountable for oversight of revenue generation and budget management in cooperation with the Director of Business and Finance and Board Treasurer. This position will also support the work of the Board and Executive Director as it relates to legislative advocacy and association partnerships, often acting as the association designee.
- Provides direct assistance to and supervision of assigned staff and contractors. Primary oversight of organizational partnerships. The associate director will mentor, coach, appraise and support professional development for assigned staff.
- Provides leadership to and administrative support for the organization?s programming and grant funded initiatives. Oversees all related activities and facilitates a shared vision between members and staff for services that promote the MAASE mission.
- Provide volunteer leader coaching in support of the organization?s strategic priorities. Attend appropriate MAASE committee, CoP and project meetings.
- Know and guide the federal and state mandates and initiatives that impact the organization and member districts.
- Develops and manages budgets for assigned staff, programs and federal grants.
- Provides leadership in evaluating the impact of new and existing services. Facilitates systems thinking and the development of structures to support large scale initiatives utilizing implementation science.
- Communicates orally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Facilitates effective meetings, provides results-oriented staff development, promotes collaborative team processes and supports the coaching of membership-based teams.
- Works collaboratively with the Professional Learning Steering Committee to plan, organize and provide professional development activities.
- Analyze stakeholder feedback to ensure that programs, products, and services are consistent with evolving member needs and the organization's strategic goals and values.
- Evaluate the feasibility of introducing, modifying, or discontinuing programs, products, and services.
- Develop comprehensive implementation plans to ensure that programs, products, and services are mission-driven.
- Participate and provide leadership in regional and state level initiatives and represent MAASE in working with other educational and related agencies, including, but not limited to the Michigan Department of Education, Council of Administrator of Special Education, Council for Exceptional Children, etc.
- Manage association image and branding as related to programs and events and collaborate with peer associations to deliver co-branded programs and initiatives.
- Pursue non-dues related revenues relative to programming.
- Support MAASE budget development. work with the organization's CPA Firm to complete necessary reports and records (e.g., annual budget reports, financial records, taxes), assist with the completion of financial filings for the organization, sign checks as authorized by the Board of Directors.
- Provide leadership in the development of the legislative positions of the organization.
- Develop and pursue strategies for building organizational membership.
- Routinely review policies and make recommendations to the Executive Board for changes and new policies and constitutional improvements.
- Maintain a current understanding of the distinguishing characteristics of certification, certificate programs, licensure, and accreditation. Assess the need for and relevance of credentialing programs. Comply with relevant standards and legal obligations associated with credentialing programs to ensure validity and reliability and minimize risk.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Possess current Michigan Administrator Certification or are enrolled in a program leading to certification as a school administrator not later than six months after date of employment, with three years to meet the certification requirements.
- Approval as a Special Education Director (preferred).
- Three to five years of successful experience as a school administrator. Current teaching certificate or related services approval required.
- Knowledge of state and federal mandates that impact special education and general education programs, services and student achievement and an ability to interpret, implement and recommend policies established by state and federal entities.
- Demonstrated skills with supervisory functions such as; appraisal, team building, coaching, continuous improvement, data driven decision making, problem solving and conflict management.
- High professional and ethical standards, with a commitment to excellence and customer service.
- Knowledge and ability to implement organizational policies and procedures within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Demonstrates strong understanding of the MAASE organization. Experience as a MAASE volunteer leader is preferred.
- Demonstrates strong project management skills with ability to exercise independent judgment and work collaboratively.
- Demonstrates strong understanding of the use of data and research within a strategic planning and continuous improvement process.
- Utilizes interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and gain cooperation of others internally and externally.
- Utilizes effective facilitation skills to provide human and material resources for supporting change and transformation of adult practice.
- Demonstrates knowledge of or the ability to learn the core competencies of an association executive as defined by ASAE.
- Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a member/leader of a team.
- Strong contract negotiation skills to maximize program impact and profitability.
- Ability to manage meetings/events and make presentations across the region.

This position requires 40 hours of remote work per week.
This is a remote position. The staff member will need a private work area and adequate power
source as well as Internet speed of 20 mbps or higher.
Other work environments may include schools and businesses.
Onsite work is required for in-person professional learning events (typically in the Lansing area). This schedule can be found at maase.org.
Onsite work may be required for other meetings as requested. Occasional travel required with
infrequent overnight stays.
Infrequent lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying of materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
The associate director must provide their own transportation.
Typical remote work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. There may be occasional meetings that are scheduled outside of this timeframe.
