Job description: Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified elementary classroom teacher who will be able to develop and sustain academic-focused instruction for his/her students in the elementary grades. The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Niji-Iro provides a unique educational opportunity which includes a two-way immersion program for both Japanese and American students. The mission of the school is to provide students the opportunity to be immersed in a second language, while learning from each other. The students will become bilingual, respectful and globally-minded individuals.

DISTRICT OVERVIEW

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 14,100 students pre-K ? post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $164 million, with a state funding of $8, 700 per pupil.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Japanese-speaking teacher will create an engaging, welcoming, and safe classroom environment which stimulates learning, growth, and development. The teacher will motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide the primary foundation for future education. The teacher will establish positive and respectful relationships with students, parents, and staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Administration in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications.
  • Speaks and writes Japanese fluently
  • Possess knowledge of effective curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices as it pertains to student growth and development
  • Possess knowledge of age-appropriate classroom management strategies
  • Possess the knowledge of appropriate instructional techniques and methods for working with students in various grade levels
  • Minimum of a bachelor?s degree, with concentration in the area of Elementary Education preferred
  • Valid elementary Michigan Teaching Certificate preferred but not required
  • A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students
  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships
  • Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Exhibits a commitment to the District?s Shared Vision and Collective Commitments
  • Creates a welcoming and positive classroom climate and culture
  • Using the Japanese language, teaches reading, writing, listening, speaking, social studies, mathematics, science, and life and learning skills to students in a classroom, using the state curriculum, further developed into Livonia Public Schools Priority Standards, adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
  • Exhibits an understanding of literacy development for elementary students and articulates and utilizes research based instructional strategies and methods appropriate for various grade levels.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve an effective learning atmosphere in the classroom
  • Evaluates students? academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares report cards and other necessary documentation to report student growth and achievement
  • Integrates the school improvement goals into the classroom
  • Maintains student classroom records using current district technology and expectations
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss curriculum, assessments, and student progress
  • Identifies student needs and collaborates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students address social, emotional and academic issues
  • Creates an effective and welcoming environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, instructional materials, bulletin boards, and websites
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
  • Utilizes age and content appropriate aids; maintains required inventory records
  • Provides supervision and oversight to students throughout assigned work day
  • Administers standardized and local assessments in accordance with district assessment program
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required
  • Participates in school improvement/AdvancEd accreditation initiatives at the district level and school level, committees and collaborative learning teams
  • Executes other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by building administrator
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association.
