Position Summary

The College of Education at Portland State University hires part-time faculty on an ongoing basis to supervise teacher candidates in clinical field experiences as part of their licensure or endorsement programs.

Requisite Skills and Abilities:
  • Understand, recognize and foster effective instructional practices (i.e., current instructional and content-specific pedagogies, research informed practices).
  • Promote instructional strategies that reach all learners (e.g., culturally and linguistically diverse, range of abilities).
  • Problem-solve and remain flexible in seeking solutions.
  • Respect the cultural implications and expectations of the school.
  • Value other's professional opinions and time, and give the time necessary for feedback and discussion.
  • Communicate clearly in a timely manner and participate as a member of the team with the cooperating professional, teacher candidate and other school personnel.
  • Recognize culturally responsive instructional and classroom practices.
Supervision Responsibilities:
  • Support teacher candidates.
  • Provide constructive support and suggestions to assist each teacher candidate's professional growth, including instructional and content-specific pedagogies.
  • Question activities and teaching strategies that assist the teacher candidate in reflecting on their teaching lesson and broadening their own self-evaluation.
  • Regularly communicate with the cohort leader (i.e., at least two times a term) regarding teacher candidate progress and areas for growth.
  • Provide brief ?drop-in? observations often and schedule a minimum of three observations and three-way conferences with the teacher and candidate.
  • Document plan of action/interventions used to assist teacher candidates in gaining skills.
  • Complete evaluations and/or assessments of teacher candidate performance according to program established timelines.
  • Engage cooperating professional and teacher candidate team(s) in field-based professional learning about co-teaching/collaboration and encourage use of these approaches.
  • Respond to email, phone calls, questions and other inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Support PSU-COE communications with the schools.
  • Promote and sustain positive collaborative working relationships among the cooperating professional and the teacher candidate.
  • Establish and maintain working relationship with the building administrator at each site and build communication between the school and the University.
  • Help to build and identify future sites that may be used for clinical experiences.
  • Support PSU-COE communications with the schools.
  • Participate in supervisor professional learning.
  • Complete teacher evaluations in TK20.
Minimum Qualifications
  • The applicant must hold a Master's degree.
  • The applicant must hold or have held (or be eligible to hold) an Oregon license appropriate to the authorization level being supervised.
  • The applicant must either hold (or be eligible to hold) an Oregon license in the content area to be supervised, or be licensed as an administrator who can supervise across content areas.
  • The applicant must be willing to have fingerprints or background check on file with the PSU Field Placement Office.
  • The applicant must have a minimum of three years teaching in early childhood, elementary, middle, or high school.

If you are hired to supervise for practicum in one or more of our endorsement programs, the payment is $212 per student per quarter as the work assignment is different from the student teaching supervision for candidate licensure.
