The City is searching for a skilled, experienced and enthusiastic professional to plan, organize and coordinate comprehensive recreational and leisure services programs at a Community Recreation Center and/or a major function or program, instructional classes and activities within a specific field of expertise.

The Recruitment Process:

The most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process which includes a Telephone Interview and Qualifications Appraisal Interview. Telephone interviews are tentatively scheduled for November 1, 2023 and Qualifications Appraisal Interviews are tentatively scheduled for November 8, 2023. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list for employment consideration for at least six months.

Qualification Guidelines

Experience: At least two years professional experience in the recreation services field such as facility management, a specific area of instructional specialization, planning, scheduling, and event coordination in a comprehensive recreation program. Experience directing recreation staff.

Education: Educational achievement equivalent to a four-year college degree in recreation or a related field. Additional years of experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year for year basis. Additionally, candidate must obtain a four-year college degree equivalent within three years of appointment.

Special Requirements:
  • Ability to obtain a CPR and advanced First Aid certificate;
  • ability to obtain a water safety instructor's certificate and lifeguard training when assigned to the aquatics program;
  • possession of a valid class C California driver's license with a safe driving record. The employee may be required to drive personal vehicle or arrange transportation between worksites.
Additional Information

Abilities/Skills/Knowledge
  • Ability to supervise and operate a community recreation center;
  • Ability to supervise, teach, and demonstrate specialized skills for the instructional program in areas such as dance and fitness, gymnastics, or arts and preschool;
  • Ability to supervise a major function or instructional program;
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, community groups, businesses, non-profit agencies and other City employees;
  • Ability to be creative and innovative in developing recreational, leisure and instructional programs;
  • Ability to create, implement and adapt recreational and instructional activities based on community needs;
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of new and constantly changing assignments;
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation and leisure service programming and administration.

Expected salary: $32.29 - 39.25 per hour
