POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the direction of the Recreational Therapy Department. Coordinates and supervises operations of the department and administers physical agents prescribed by a referring physician. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Assures competency of all staff. Assists in formulating budget, evaluates department performance versus budget, and takes appropriate action to remain in budget guidelines. Develops and implements a system of reviewing department charges, ensuring that patient charges are accurate and entered on a timely basis. Maintains efficient and effective department operation while requiring compliance with all state, federal, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the direction of the Recreational Therapy Department staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a wide range of psychosocial, cognitive, and/or developmental disorders and physical disabilities.
  • Ability to perform an appropriate assessment on all patients as related to the therapy requested and provided reassessments as per policy.
  • Ability to observe and evaluate treatment effect, and recommends a change to a physician if needed.
  • Able to assess patient pain interfering with the optimal level of function or participation in rehabilitation - makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency of all recreational therapy modalities.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Ensures all aspects of patient care are performed in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains department cleanliness and safety. Complies with ongoing departmental inspections of equipment and physical space, and makes recommendations regarding equipment utilization and needs.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, and administrative team.
  • Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients? needs are met and facility policy is followed.
  • Maintains records pertinent to staff and operation of the department.
  • Prepares reports regarding Recreational Services, i.e., utilization, performance improvement, service data, outcome data, and productivity, including long-term capital budget and short-term operational budget.
  • Studies current trends and developments in rehabilitative medicine through current literature and professional society.
  • Provides education to staff on performance improvement.
  • Ability to plan and organize orientation and in-service training for department staff members, and participate in guidance and educational programs.
  • Trains staff utilizing on-the-job training for nursing and other hospital staff, as well as departmental staff.
  • Efforts to ensure that all department aligns with the overall mission of the company.
  • Participate in staff and state regulatory training as required
  • Adhere to program policies and procedures while maintaining a professional code of ethics
  • Maintain a valid driver?s license
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATION:
  • Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, or other related fields.
  • Current State Licensure or certification.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in the behavioral health care setting.
  • At least two (2) years experience in management of Recreational Activities Department or related department.
  • Current BCLS certification.

  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills within the facility and with the public.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of all Federal, State, and local codes.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, Life Safety, & NEC Electrical Codes
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications.

  • Effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Detail-oriented and persuasive.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful conditions.
