About the Department



The Learning Commons provides free centralized academic support for all University of Cincinnati students. We bring together faculty, best-practices in teaching and learning, and hundreds of outstanding peer educators to create flexible academic success programming. Each year more than 6,000 students take advantage of Learning Commons programs to build confidence, integrate on campus, and master challenging course content.



Reporting to the Assistant Director of Content Supports, this position will oversee the Peer Tutoring program. The Learning Commons offers tutoring in more than 300 undergraduate courses including subjects such as math, science, languages, and business through in-person and online services. This position also works directly with Student Athlete Support Services to provide regular in-house tutoring for student athletes. This position supervises a Peer Tutoring Graduate Assistant, a team of 5-6 Peer Tutoring undergraduate Coordinators (student leadership roles), along with the 50-70 Peer Tutors. Within the Learning Commons, this position is heavily involved in initiatives related to one-on-one student support, student-athlete support, distance education, and regional campus student support.



Job Overview



Provide administrative and operational oversight for a designated programmatic area in the Learning Commons. Program areas include:


  • Academic Writing Center

  • Learning Assistance and Supplemental Instruction

  • Math and Science Support Center and Supplemental Review Sessions

  • Learning Communities

  • Peer Tutoring

Essential Functions



  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student staff, including Mentors and Student Coordinators.

  • Develop and assess training for new hires and returning student employees.

  • In conjunction with position supervisor, develop program objectives and corresponding program assessment. Collect and monitor program data, track weekly usage, identify problems and solutions, develop clear goals and action steps for program enhancement.

  • Manage online platforms for services including Learning Management System (LMS), scheduling, video conferencing, and tutoring platforms.

  • Participate in Learning Commons departmental committees called Goal Teams and assist with projects and initiatives.

  • Oversee student staff timekeeping, track and forecast program budgets, and implement program decisions based on budget forecasts.

  • Educate, communicate, liaise, and perform outreach about Learning Commons initiatives to relevant departments, faculty, staff, and campus partners.

  • May supervise a graduate assistant; assist with and promote the Learning Commons through New Student Orientation; hold an additional responsibility in any area supporting the Learning Commons, Peer Education Network, university service committees, etc.; collaborate with faculty and campus partners to create course content.

Required Education



Bachelor's Degree



Required Experience



One (1) year of related experience, including experience related to undergraduate or graduate work.



Additional Qualifications Considered



  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related field (education, STEM, foreign language).

  • Experience in one-on-one student support, distance education, regional campus student support, and/or student-athlete support.

  • Qualified applicants for this position are not required to have content knowledge in the courses supported by Peer Tutoring, but knowledge in relevant areas would be considered.
