This vacancy is located within the REHABILITATION DEPARTMENT at the Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System, Jackson, LA. ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised or residential, outpatient and inpatient services.
This posting may be used to fill vacancies in other divisions or units at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System within 90 days of closing.

This opening will be filled as a part-time WAE position (must not exceed 1245 hours in a 12 month period).

Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in an organized recreational program as a worker, teacher, instructor, or counselor.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one or a combination of these specialized fields: recreation, recreation therapy, physical education, music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, drama therapy, horticultural therapy or psychology.

NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

To assist professional therapeutic recreational specialist personnel in providing therapeutic recreational services to special populations.

Level of Work:
Entry.

Supervision Received:
Close from a higher-level therapeutic recreational specialist.

Supervision Exercised:
Functional over therapy aides working in the therapeutic recreational services field.

Location of Work:
Department of Health and Hospitals; LSU Health Sciences Center, Acute Care Hospitals, Medical Schools; Department of Veterans Affairs; Department of Corrections.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 1 by the absence of professional-level therapeutic recreation duties and responsibilities.

Examples of Work

Conducts a variety of therapeutic, recreational, leisure counseling or education, and leisure skill development activities under the supervision of therapeutic recreational specialists.

Conducts group and individual classes and field trips.

Observes and assesses patients' reactions to treatment and reports reactions to professional therapeutic recreational specialist.

Maintains recreational equipment.

Escorts clients to recreational activities.

Supervises and assigns work to nonprofessional therapeutic recreation personnel.

May be required to provide some diversionary recreation or creative arts activities and services from time to time or on a continuing basis, in addition to medically prescribed therapy activities.
