Primary Function of Organizational Unit



The School of Music seeks a Department Chair for the Instrumental Department.

The School of Music consists of five departments: Instrumental; Keyboard; Music Education/Therapy; Theory, Composition and Musicology; and Vocal Studies. These departments function as semi-autonomous units with department chairs serving as unit administrators for their respective department. Department Chairs shall be selected and evaluated in accordance with established University policies and procedures. It is essential that the person selected for the position of Department Chair enjoy the mutual confidence of the department faculty and the director of the School of Music.

Job Duties



INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University



The Department Chair will:

1. Represent the department faculty to the Director in the administration of the affairs of the School of Music and the Department.

2. Exercise participative management in reaching decisions on department policies.

3. Manage the operation of the department including budget and equipment allocations and ensure the maintenance of up to date records.

4. Promote productive and harmonious professional relationships within the Department, School and University.

5. Assist faculty in student recruiting efforts.

6. In consultation with the Director, annually evaluate each faculty member's performance in teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

7. Perform duties listed in the ECU Faculty Manual, Part IX regarding personnel matters.

8. Give due consideration to the recommendations of department committees.

9. Oversee School of Music entrance auditions and upper level barriers for students in their respective departments.

10. Determine the use of the physical facilities assigned to the department.

11. Convene a department faculty meeting at least once per semester.

12. Encourage continuous improvement in all activities within the department.

13. Work under the direction of the Director with specific delegated responsibilities.

14. Serve as unit administrator regarding all personnel procedures according to the ECU Faculty Manual.

Minimum Education/Experience



Master of Music with extensive faculty experience in the School of Music and leadership potential will be considered for this reassignment.



Qualifying degrees must be conferred from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation



None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education



Teaching experience in the instrumental curriculum preferred.

License or Certification Required by the Department
