The Fossil Distance Learning Program is a program within the Fossil Charter School in Fossil, Oregon. This charter school is the only school in the Fossil School District. The Fossil Distance Learning Program has been in existence for the last 13 years, serving students in grades K-8. This program has provided diverse educational opportunities to students across the State of Oregon.

The distance learning program model is based on a hybrid distance education model wherein teachers conduct parent and student visits, virtual instruction, monitor/evaluate student progress, guide and assist parents in their support of the students, and work with a collaborative team of teachers. Fossil Charter School contracts with Distance Learning Solutions, Inc. to administer and deliver instructional and related services to students enrolled in the Fossil Distance Learning Program.

Distance Learning Solutions, Inc. directors are looking for candidates for this position to start with us this January. For this position, Distance Learning Solutions, Inc. directors are looking for a candidate with a special education endorsement, a self-contained license current for the state of Oregon, and who lives in the state of Oregon. We are looking to fill a 1.0 FTE position in this region. We prefer candidates with experience with charter schools, online education, and homeschooling.

Special Education Educational Specialist

Job Definition: Under the general supervision of Distance Learning Solutions, Inc., the employee performs a variety of tasks, with the major responsibility being that of providing exceptional special educational instruction and related educational services for families and students participating in a virtual schooling program. A portion of this position will also include responsibilities in special education record keeping, scheduling, and data management and working with the response to intervention (RTI) department.

Reports to: Program Directors of Distance Learning Solutions, Inc.

Job Characteristics: Work collaboratively with school personnel and parents in providing, implementing, designing, and adapting instructional programs for the special educational needs of identified students. The caseload will include students with a variety of disabilities, skill levels, and needs. This position will also assist the special education department and RTI department with administrative tasks such as records and data management.

Primary Functions:

1. Develop or write Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students and manage time to complete required special education paperwork within timelines.

2. Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on students and activities, as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.

3. Utilize effective, evidence based instructional strategies and techniques to meet the needs of students with a variety of disabilities

4. Use a variety of curriculum and virtual tools to implement instructional plans

5. Identify individual students' needs by continuously assessing their abilities using teacher created and curriculum-based assessment tools.

6. Collaborate with other teachers that provide instruction to special education students to ensure that the students receive appropriate support

7. Provide consultation to parents and guardians on using evidence based instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications, as well as choosing specific curriculum and programs that meet the needs of their student

8. Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, service providers, and other professionals to develop individual educational plans designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social development

9. Model and teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement

10. Initiate, plan, and carry out regular and required parent/student meetings in person or via technology platforms

11. Work with district and ESD staff to properly report data to the Oregon Department of Education and other stakeholders.

12. Assist the special education director and RTI specialist with record keeping, data management, special education compliance, and timelines.

13. Effectively work with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds

14. Attend all staff meetings

15. Attend required meetings with supervising directors

16. Attend weekly meetings with the Special Education Director

17. Maintain daily contact logs for student and family contacts

18. Submit monthly documentation for mileage and appointments

19. Is responsive to feedback from colleagues and administrators and is able to apply feedback to improve skills and services to students

20. Strive to improve professional competence through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, classes and other professional development activities

Other Functions:

1. Participate in in-service and professional development activities

2. Attend meetings and serve on committees as assigned or directed (or if individual volunteers)

3. Set and carry out goals each year

4. Contribute to the continuous innovation that is required of a unique distance learning program

5. Operate office machines, including computers, scanners, copiers, and fax machines

6. Use a variety of computer software, including MS Excel

7. Fulfills other duties as assumed or as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Licensure/Certification:
  • Bachelor?s degree
  • Current State of Oregon Teaching License
  • Endorsements as required by the Oregon Department of Education with the appropriate endorsement in areas of assignment. Special Education Educational Specialists must have obtained the TSPC Special Education or its equivalent license endorsement
Experience:
  • One year of successful teaching experience within the subject area OR successful completion of an Oregon instructional internship program
  • Three years experience, preferred
Other minimum qualifications:
  • Must have a dedicated workspace free from distractions
  • Operational knowledge of the Internet and Web-related technologies
  • Must also be able to pass a background check
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certification
Additional Experience:

Demonstrated competency through college preparation, student teaching, and/or classroom experience, and professional development.

Salary and Benefits: DOE * Typical starting salary is $61,000.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

This job requires sitting or standing at a workstation for most of the day.

  • Frequency of travel: Occasional travel may be required to various schools as daily work locations, meetings, trainings, and conferences; assigned locations will vary and may require overnight stays
