Job Description:
Nassau Community College invites applications for Adjunct Instructors to teach courses in various Departments. The successful candidate will teach courses, plan and deliver curriculum in classrooms, laboratories and/or practicums ensuring that students acquire essential skill sets and objectives stated in departmental course outlines. Instruction should be meaningful and assessment-based so students may be observed and evaluated. Monitor the students' progress, keep grade records and must provide relevant assessment data to the department in a timely manner. Use appropriate terminology, and technology to communicate with students and provide academic support. Comply with College policies and procedures. Maintain a positive and professional learning environment for students.
Requirements:
Below are general Minimum Qualifications for Teaching Faculty by Course. Please note, additional qualifications and certifications may be required for specific courses and all degrees must be from accredited colleges/universities.
All Faculty are required to have experience with the College's current Learning Management, E-mail, and Video Conferencing Systems, as well as Microsoft Office Suite of Products.
ACCOUNTING COURSES: Bachelor's degree plus an advanced degree, one of which must be in accounting; AND CPA or CMA license; AND 1 year practical experience or 1 year college teaching experience; OR Bachelor's degree in any academic discipline; AND have met the New York State Department of Education 150 semester hour educational requirement and are licensed as CPA in the state of New York; AND an advanced degree; AND 1 year practical or one-year college teaching experience.
In addition, within one semester of employment, all accounting faculty are also required to complete the training in the textbook publisher's supplemental materials for the current edition of the textbook being used for all teaching modalities.
ADMINISTRATIVE BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY COURSES: Graduate-level degree; AND 1 of the following: (a) 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time related experience; OR (b) previous teaching experience; OR (c) expertise in specialized areas.
AFRICAN-AMERICAN COURSES: MA in African History, Africana Studies, Caribbean Studies, African American Studies, or related field from accredited university; OR, MA in a related field with minimum of 12 credits of Africana Studies, Caribbean Studies, African American Literature, African American Studies, or related coursework EXCEPT as follows for the fine and performing arts; AND 2 years' experience teaching introductory and survey courses on a college campus with a diverse population that includes traditional and nontraditional student population required. NOTE: Due to dual listing with other courses and/or departments, faculty must meet the additional qualifications of the dual-listed course and/or department.
ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES COURSES: Master's degree in Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, or a related field; AND 1 year of college teaching experience.
AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE COURSES: Master's Degree in a deaf related field such as American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or other related fields; AND experience teaching ASL on either a high school or college level.
ANTHROPOLOGY COURSES: Master's degree in Anthropology; OR Masters' degree in Sociology with at least six graduate credits in Anthropology.
ARABIC, CHINESE, HEBREW, JAPANESE and KOREAN COURSES: Bachelor's Degree (BA) in the target language; AND 1 year teaching experience; AND Native or near native fluency in the target language; AND 1 year experience in current technology and Learning Management System (e.g. Blackboard, iLrn, VHL Central, MySpanishLab, etc.) in Foreign Language instruction.
ART COURSES: Master's degree and/or a Master's in Fine Arts degree in an art-related field; AND continued artistic growth and involvement in his/her areas of specialty through current art exhibitions, freelance work, and/or publication and presentation of research papers in a given field; AND; portfolio of his/her recent artistic work related to the areas in which he/she wishes to be considered. This work will be reviewed by P&B members and/or the Chair of the Art Department, together with the applicant; AND portfolio of student work relevant to the specific field; AND Current digital skills required in specific field; AND 1 year of teaching experience. In addition, all Classroom faculty must re-qualify for any class he/she hasn't taught for five years.
BIOLOGY COURSES: Master's Degree in a biological science; AND 1 semester of college teaching experience, or published research in a biological science in a peer-reviewed journal.
BUSINESS COURSES: M.B.A. Degree in Management; AND 1 year business teaching experience in undergraduate or graduate level business courses; AND 2 years' business experience.
CHEMISTRY COURSES: Master's Degree in Education (M.Ed) with NY Certification in Chemistry, OR Master's Degree in Chemistry (MS) or equivalent, and 3 years' experience teaching Chemistry at the High School or College level, or 3 years' recent work experience in the field of chemistry within the last 5 years.
COMMUNICATION COURSES: Master's Degree appropriate to the specific field for which they are being hired. Specific disciplines include, but are not limited to: Interpersonal/Human Communication, Rhetoric, Organizational Communication, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Speech & Language Pathology; AND Successful completion of Interpersonal Communications/Human Communications and Public Speaking courses at the graduate level.
COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES: Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field with a strong emphasis in computer science; OR Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with a strong emphasis in computer science; AND 3 years related work experience.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE and PRIVATE SECURITY ADMINISTRATION COURSES: Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Public Administration, or Professional Studies in Criminal Justice.
CULINARY COURSES: Culinary Arts Degree; AND one of the following: (a) 2 years American Culinary Federation (ACF) certified training, or (b) 2 years accredited, verifiable culinary apprenticeship; or (3) Bachelor's degree in Culinary Arts; AND 3 years Full Time, staff supervised, Executive Chef or Sous Chef experience in Chef du Cuisine, Chef de Partie, Pastry or Baking Arts, Butchery, Charcuterie or Garde Manger; AND must maintain a current ServSafe Sanitation Certificate or equivalent on file with the College.
DANCE COURSES: Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance; AND 3 years of professional experience as necessary for the specific course.
ECONOMICS/FINANCE COURSES: Master's Degree in Economics or Finance. Must include 3 credits of graduate level coursework in specific course.
EDUCATION COURSES: Master's degree in Psychology or related field.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COURSES: Master's degree in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Professional Studies in a closely related field; AND paid professional experience in the field of Fire Science.
ENGINEERING COURSES: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering or a related field.
ENGLISH COURSES: Master's Degree in English, Composition/Rhetoric, Creative Writing, Journalism, English/Education, TESOL or a related multi-disciplinary field, including but not limited to African American Studies, American Studies, or Comparative Literature, with English Literature or Composition as one of the principal concentrations; AND 3 years of college experience teaching Writing courses within the past 5 years, with the terminal degree substituting for 1 year of college teaching experience; AND experience communicating via email and use of word processing software, student information systems, online databases, and search engines; AND experience implementing institutional learning outcomes and course goals within regularly updated syllabi to measure student outcomes.
FIRE SCIENCE COURSES: Master's degree in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Professional Studies in a closely related field; AND paid professional experience in the field of Fire Science.
FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, LATIN, PORTUGUESE, RUSSIAN and SPANISH LANGUAGE COURSES: Master's Degree in the target language and 1 year experience in current technology and Learning Management System (e.g. Blackboard, iLrn, VHL Central, MySpanishLab, etc.) in Foreign Language instruction; OR Native Speaker of the target language with M.A./M.S. in a different foreign language, 1 year of college-level teaching experience in the target language, and 1 year experience in current technology and Learning Management System (e.g. Blackboard, iLrn, VHL Central, MySpanishLab, etc.) in Foreign Language instruction; OR M.S. in Education with a specialization in the target language, 1 year of college-level teaching experience in the target language, and 1 year experience in current technology and Learning Management System (e.g. Blackboard, iLrn, VHL Central, MySpanishLab, etc.) in Foreign Language instruction.
GEOGRAPHY COURSES: MA or MS degree in Geography; AND 30 additional graduate credits in Geography beyond the MA or MS.
HEALTH INFORMATION COURSES: Bachelor's Degree; AND AHIMA credential (CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, and/or RHIA)2; AND one of the following: (a) 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time related experience, or (b) previous teaching experience, or expertise in specialized area.
HEALTH STUDIES COURSES: Master's degree in Health Education, Social Work, Health Sciences, Public Health, Community Health, Global Health, Nutrition, Human Sexuality, or other related fields.
HISTORY COURSES: MA degree in History; AND 30 additional graduate credits in History beyond the MA.
HOSPITALITY COURSES: Master's Degree in a related field; AND 3 years full time management experience; OR (b) Bachelor's Degree; and 5 years full time management experience in the industry. Must earn a Master's Degree within 5 years of the date of hire.
HUMAN SERVICES COURSES: MSW with an active state-issued license to practice social work; OR DSW or PhD in Social Work or Social Welfare with 35 verifiable Social Work CEs within the past three years and 2 years of field experience in a clinical or agency setting; OR DSW or PhD in Social Work or Social Welfare with verifiable record of 3 peer-reviewed research presentations or publications within the past 3 years and 2 years of field experience in a clinical or agency setting.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/GENERAL COMPUTER COURSES: Master's degree in Information Technology or a related field with a strong emphasis in information technology; OR Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field with a strong emphasis in information technology; AND three (3) years related work experience.
LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES COURSES: MA degree in Latin American Studies and 30 additional graduate credits in Latin American Studies beyond the MA; OR MA degree in History, Political Science, Geography, Literature or Foreign Languages and 30 additional graduate credits in the aforementioned areas with a specialization in Latin America.
LEGAL STUDIES COURSES: An attorney duly admitted to practice law in New York State and in good standing with the New York State Bar.
MARKETING, RETAILING, FASHION BUYING & MERCHANDISING COURSES: Master's Degree and current knowledge of respective field.
MATH COURSES: Master's degree in Mathematics or a related field with a strong emphasis in mathematics.
MEDICAL ASSISTANT COURSES: Bachelor's Degree; AND one of the following: (a) previous teaching experience, or (b) expertise in specialized areas, or (c) work experience in related discipline.
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN COURSES: Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or related field; AND Certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); AND New York State license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist; AND 3 years full-time clinical experience as a medical laboratory professional in the past 5 years; AND experience in the specialty area(s) of the curriculum in which the faculty has teaching responsibility; AND teaching experience.
MORTUARY SCIENCE COURSES: New York State Funeral Director's License, valid and active; AND a degree from an American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) accredited Mortuary Science Program; AND Master's Degree in administration, management or science from a regionally accredited college or university or degree must be earned within 5 years of appointment; and 2 years' classroom teaching experience in an ABFSE accredited Mortuary Science Associate or Bachelor's degree program; AND 2 years' clinical teaching experience in embalming and restorative techniques in an Associate or Bachelor's program; AND recent work experience as a licensed funeral director.
MUSIC COURSES: Bachelor's Degree; AND professional performance experience on relevant instruments or voice.
NURSING COURSES:
Lecture Faculty: Current, unrestricted New York State RN License; AND Master's Degree in Nursing; AND classroom teaching experience: a minimum of 2 years in a Master's, Bachelor's or Associate degree program and/or experience in staff development within a hospital facility or health care organization; AND experience teaching at postsecondary and/or higher education level incorporating curriculum and instructional methods and current issues in nursing education and practice or course work incorporating curriculum and instructional methods into teaching and current issues in nursing education and practice; AND experience and/or course in leadership, organizational ability, information literacy, use of technology, best practices in educational and clinical settings; AND contributions in scholarship/ research, practice, community service, professional service; AND for specialties such as OB, PEDS, and PSY, experience teaching at the higher education level in the specialty area or 15CH of higher education or CEU credits in the specialty area.
Lab or Clinical Faculty: Current, unrestricted New York State RN License; AND Master's Degree in Nursing; AND hold or have held a full-time or part-time time position in a clinical practice environment; AND experience with contemporary issues in healthcare settings: current nursing practice and transition of new graduates into nursing practice; AND for specialties such as OB, PEDS, and PSY, experience teaching at the higher education level in the specialty area or 15CH of higher education or CEU credits in the specialty area.
NUTRITION COURSES: Registered Dietitian, with proof of credential on file with the College (must remain current), Master's degree; and 3 years Hospital/Clinical experience; OR Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics, and 5 years Hospital/Clinical experience in the industry, and must earn a Master's Degree within 5 years of the date of hire.
PHILOSOPHY COURSES: Master's Degree in Philosophy.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSES: Master's Degree in Physical Education; OR Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and a Master's degree in a related field, such as Exercise Science, Sports Science, Health, or Dance. Faculty holding a Master's degree in a related field such as Exercise Science, Sports Science, Health, or Dance who do not hold a Bachelor's in Physical Education must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in a related field (professional athlete, professional dancer, professional strength and conditioning coach); OR a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Sport Science, Health or a related field and 5 years' experience in a professional field and 5 years' teaching in that specialty; OR Faculty without a degree must have 10 years' experience in a professional field (professional athlete, professional dancer, etc.) and 5 years teaching experience for that specialty; AND in addition to the above, ALL FACULTY members must show current course work that demonstrates competency in that area, and/or observe the class at NCC for one semester and/or have taught the class in the past 5 years. Further, if a faculty member has not taught a class otherwise qualified for in the past five years, said faculty member must show current course work that demonstrates competency in that area and/or observe the class at NCC for one semester; and must have an up-to-date CPR and AED Certification.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE COURSES: Master's Degree in one of the physical sciences and at least 15 hours graduate level courses relevant to the subject area. In addition, 1 academic year of full-time college-level teaching or 1 year of work experience in the subject area will count towards 3 credits of the requirement with a maximum of 2 years/6 credits.
PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANT COURSES: Currently licensed to practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) or Physical Therapist (PT) in the United States jurisdiction and is eligible for a license to practice in NY; AND holds a degree in physical therapy, Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant; AND 1 year of full time post-licensure clinical experience; AND experience with the role of the PTA; AND experience in the specialty area(s) of the curriculum in which the faculty has teaching responsibility.
POLITICAL SCIENCE COURSES: MA degree in Political Science, Public Policy or Public Administration plus 30 additional graduate credits in the aforementioned areas beyond the MA.
PSYCHOLOGY COURSES: Master's degree in Psychology or related field.
RADIATION THERAPY COURSES: Current registration in radiation therapy with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (or equivalent, i.e. registered physicist); AND Associate in Applied Science degree for Radiologic Therapy Technology; AND 5 years' clinical experience in the professional discipline; AND 1 year experience in supervision, instruction, and evaluation; AND New York State license in Radiation Therapy.
RADIOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGY COURSES: Licensed and registered in New York State as a current Radiologic Technologist (RTR); AND Baccalaureate degree in a related field; AND Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology from an accredited program; AND 5 years' full-time experience as a Radiologic Technologist in an acute care hospital setting, or outpatient facility; AND 2 years' experience in teaching, supervision and student evaluation; AND current and valid American Registry of Radiologic Technologist registration or equivalent.
READING COURSES: Master's Degree in Reading or Literacy Studies, or a Master's Degree in Education with a specialization in Reading or Literacy Studies; AND 3 years of teaching experience in developmental reading at the secondary or post- secondary level within the past 6 years; AND completion of the department-run mandatory training for RDG 001, RDG 002 and/or RDG003 which focuses on course goals; student learning outcomes; core topics and curriculum; policies and practices; sample syllabi; teaching strategies; suggested activities and assignments; grading; and assessment.
RESPIRATORY CARE COURSES: A.A.S in Respiratory Care; AND 5 years full-time clinical respiratory care experience in an acute care hospital setting; AND National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential; AND New York State Respiratory Therapist license; AND Clinical and/or didactic respiratory care teaching experience.
SOCIOLOGY COURSES: Master's degree in Sociology; OR Master's degree in Anthropology or Social Work with at least 6 graduate credits in Sociology or with 3 peer-reviewed sociological presentations or publications; OR Master's degree in a related field (for example, Gender and Women's Studies, or American Studies) with 3 peer-reviewed sociological presentations or publications.
SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY COURSES: Associate in Applied Science degree from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited program in surgical technology; AND current certification in surgical technology (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA); AND current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association; AND 5 years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
THEATRE COURSES: Master of Arts degree in Theatre; AND 3 years of college teaching experience in the related subject area.
