Position Title: Fiber Art Teaching Artist

Start Date: Hiring on a rolling basis throughout the Summer 2024-Winter 2024

Location: In-person at partnering educational institutions and homeless shelters in the Washington, DC area.

This role is Part-Time - August 2024-January 2025.

Program & Job Description:

EYL 365 Project is currently accepting applications for an Elementary & Middle School Fiber Art Teaching Artist for the 2024 programming year. Our organization is seeking passionate and experienced Fiber Art Teaching Artists who have a strong interest in Social Justice and Racial Equity Arts Education. A Fiber Art Teaching Artist will provide in-school and/or after-school residency opportunities, generally between 9:30am - 4pm and| or 3:30 - 9:00 pm for 1.5 to 2 hours, at DCPS Ward 6, 7 and 8 partner schools, transitional housing units and recreation centers. As part of this position, you will be responsible for providing and delivering advanced interactive and fun Fiber Art lessons to youth ages five to fourteen in a creative, structured and engaging environment. It will be necessary for the successful candidate to create and deliver lesson plans, lead Fiber Art exercises and projects, and mentor youth in the development of their creative skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

? Manage online/paperwork attendance and grading system.

? Teaching gifted and talented high school students (two two-hour classes per day) in a well-

established fiber program.

? Advise and prepare students for post-secondary study in visual arts

? Provide solid instruction in fiber techniques, design concepts, idea development, research,

portfolio presentation, and sketchbook practice.

? Help students submit, prepare, and pack artwork for internal and external exhibitions

opportunities.

? Monitoring and reporting student attendance, progress grades, and using this information for instructional adjustments and providing student support in the form of feedback, coaching, and other academic assistance

? Provide administrative support, as needed.

? Manage classroom time effectively to balance student needs and attention

? Ensure the safety of students at all times while in the school.

? Monitor and evaluate student progress and communicate progress and development to parents.

QUALIFICATIONS Required

? Master of Fine Arts in Fiber, Textiles, or Fashion Design (or closely related field)

? Minimum of three years of teaching experience (preferably at the middle school up to college

level)

? Ability to instruct a wide variety of fiber/textile/fashion techniques including but not limited to: sewing, pattern-drafting, draping, weaving, basketry, felting, crochet, etc.

? Experience maintaining a fiber studio including dye kitchen, sewing equipment, weaving looms, etc.

? Must be able to receive constructive feedback on teaching techniques and apply the feedback to new teaching situations, and environments

? Ability to interact effectively with the public

? Ability to operate basic office equipment, i.e. telephones, photocopiers and computers

? Effective time management and organizational skills

? Ability to work effectively with staff and management

? Adaptable to changes in the workplace

? An ability to work collaboratively with others in the department.

? One year teaching experience at the college level.

? Ability to work with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds;

? Interested applicants should have a valid social security number/be able to work in the US, and complete a background check

? Teaching experience with youth and children in a group setting

? Reliable transportation

? Uninterrupted and on-time availability for teaching hours

? A willingness to learn and grow, and the flexibility to adapt to new changes

? Functional problem-solving abilities

? Good classroom management skills

? A clear background check.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract

Pay: $40.00 - $60.00 per hour
