About the position

The Director, Business Risk and Controls at USAA is responsible for leading a team that develops, implements, and oversees risk and compliance management programs. This role supports business leaders in adhering to established risk frameworks and supervises business controls to minimize risk exposures. The director is accountable for mentoring a high-performing team that conducts risk assessments, identifies control failures, facilitates remediation, and manages audits and regulatory exams. The position emphasizes collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to enhance the overall control environment and ensure effective risk management practices.

Responsibilities
? Direct staff and initiatives that support risk and control management programs, including governance support and risk oversight.

? Counsel senior management and influence process change.

? Build and lead a high-performing team of risk and internal control professionals through recruitment, training, coaching, and performance management.

? Lead consulting relationships with internal and external clients regarding budget and implementation deliverables and risk mitigation plans.

? Partner with team members to identify, assess, and document risks and controls related to new or modified products and services.
,
? Review and recommend governance policies and procedures in partnership with senior leaders.
,
? Provide counsel to business unit managers on risk management issues and evaluate new product strategies.
,
? Educate risk owners on risk/control practices and collaborate with other lines of defense.
,
? Implement processes for collecting accurate internal loss data from business areas.
,
? Direct analysis and data mining initiatives to identify and validate emerging risk exposures.
,
? Assist in early identification of risk trends by monitoring key performance and risk indicators.
,
? Prepare key reports and communications for governance committees, senior leaders, and regulatory bodies.

Requirements
? Bachelor's degree in risk management, Business, Finance, or related field; OR 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.

? Minimum 8 years' experience in risk and/or compliance activities in a financial services environment or relevant industry; OR 8 years' experience in a relevant quantitative field; OR Advanced degree in a risk management or quantitative field with 6 years' experience; OR PhD in a risk management or quantitative field with 4 years' experience.

? 3 years' direct team lead or people management experience.
,
? Knowledge of federal laws and regulations relevant to risk management.

? Experience in risk reporting to executive leadership and risk committees.

? Strong skills in guiding teams to build optimal visuals and views.

? Experience using advanced data analytics to provide risk insights.

? Experience in report automation.

? Experience in data and information governance.
