GEICO Staff Counsel is seeking an Attorney I or Attorney II for our California region. The primary objective of this position is to defend lawsuits against GEICO insureds and represent GEICO in subrogation, Uninsured Motorist (UM), and Underinsured Motorist (UIM) cases. The attorney will operate under the general supervision of the Managing Attorney and will be expected to handle cases in courts of both limited and unlimited jurisdiction. This role requires a strong understanding of legal principles and the ability to apply them effectively in various legal contexts. The essential functions of the position include conducting thorough legal research, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the claims department. The attorney will be responsible for preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, which includes depositions and examinations before trial, as well as examinations under oath based on jurisdiction. The attorney will also defend cases through trial, arbitration, or mediation as applicable, ensuring that all deadlines for responding to pleadings and correspondence are met. In addition to legal responsibilities, the attorney must adhere to the GEICO Code of Conduct and company policies, maintain attendance standards, and facilitate interaction with management and co-workers. The role requires the ability to document files clearly and concisely, follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and demonstrate strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. The attorney must also be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information and show successful performance in handling primary trial responsibilities for cases of moderate severity and complexity.

Requirements
? Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in California.

? Must have a minimum of one to five years of litigation experience, including insurance defense or personal injury.

? Must meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.
