About the position

The Transportation Engineer II-IV position at TxDOT's Austin District North Travis Area Office involves advanced and complex transportation engineering work focused on roadway design and maintenance project development. The role encompasses urban safety improvement and infrastructure projects, requiring substantial experience in roadway design and knowledge of computer-aided drafting operations, particularly with Bentley / MicroStation Open Roads Designer (ORD) CAD software. The position also entails basic preparation of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) in accordance with TxDOT Roadway Design Criteria. In this role, the engineer will perform a variety of essential duties, including the development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts. The engineer may also serve as a project manager, overseeing consultants and ensuring the quality of their work. The engineer will assist with design, computer operations, and plan preparation, while also evaluating and making recommendations for project plans and schedules to ensure efficient execution. The position requires interaction with governmental officials and private entities, necessitating strong communication skills. Engineers at this level are expected to establish their own work plans and priorities to meet objectives, with issues typically handled independently rather than referred to a supervisor.
