The person hired for this position will lead digital transformation and application of AI for the Commercial Branding & Transportation (CB&T) Laboratory, reporting directly to the Vice President, Research & Development, CB&T. The Digital Science Senior Manager leads a team of data scientists and data engineers tasked with enabling AI and building AI solutions that provide efficiencies for R&D, manufacturing and the business. In addition to developing and executing the strategy for the team, the Digital Science Senior Manager shares in the work of day-to-day team tasks.Your role will involve developing predictive models, applying statistical methodologies and machine learning techniques to design experiments, analyzing complex data sets, and providing actionable insights to enhance R&D (product development, product engineering and application engineering), manufacturing and business operations.The ideal candidate will perform well in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment and is able to manage multiple projects effectively while collaborating with personnel across the organization, to include manufacturing and other 3M labs.As a Digital Science Senior Manager, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. - Leading multiple data science projects of large scope and impact that create novel algorithms, gather, transform, and integrate large volumes of data, performing analysis, interpreting results, using machine learning to create advanced data models and analyze complex datasets identifying trends and patterns, providing actionable insights and recommendations that drive R&D effectiveness and manufacturing process improvement
- Acting as internal advisor and expert, championing long-range designs for data science projects and innovations, and serving as a strategic advisor to senior management
- Building and maintaining a Data Science and AI road map for the division, ensuring its alignment with business needs and strategy, along with a hopper of Data Science and AI projects and priorities
- Working with stakeholders to understand their needs and designing AI solutions that support decision-making and efficiencies, and effectively communicating status of projects, insights and recommendations to senior leadership and those stakeholders on a regular cadence
- Developing a team of data scientists / data engineers, ensuring they continue to grow in their roles and have the toolsets needed to perform their jobs to the fullest, teaching classes, leading technical sessions and provide technical guidance, as well as managing the team’s backlog, ensuring it is groomed with requirements and prioritized appropriately based on stakeholders’ needs
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, data science, software engineering, machine learning, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, or physics (completed and verified prior to start)
- Eight (8) years of experience in Algorithm Development or Software Engineering in Machine Learning, Statistics, or Numerical Methods in a private, public, government or military environment
- Master’s or Ph.D. degree in computer science, electrical engineering, data science, software engineering, machine learning, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, or other field related to or utilizing data science from an accredited institution
- Extensive industry experience in deep learning, machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistics, and/or applied mathematics.
- Skills include an expert understanding of current data science/machine learning/data analytics techniques:
- Experience utilizing cloud data science tools to deploy solutions.
- Experience analyzing large, complex, multi-dimensional datasets with a variety of tools.
- Experience applying theoretical models in an applied environment.
- Experience with a broad set of data science approaches and techniques.
- Experience with BI tools and data frameworks.
- Experience in programming languages (one or more of R, Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript or MATLAB) and Database Programming.
- Experience in SQL for data manipulation and querying
- Experience with business intelligence dashboard tools such as Shiny, Dash, PowerBI, or Tableau
- Strong fundamentals in problem solving, algorithm design, and complexity analysis.
- Strong scientific and technical acumen, with demonstrated interest and ability to make connections between science/technology and real-world concerns.
- Strong communication, technical writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate complex statistical and machine learning concepts in a clear and actionable way to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Proven track record in leading, mentoring, and developing teams of data scientists
- Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to St. Paul, MN at least 3 days per week)
