Empowering High School Students to Achieve Their Full Potential

Join our team at Pennsylvania State University as a Program Advisor (Counselor 2) for the Upward Bound Programs (UBP) serving Mifflin County and Newport High Schools. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in helping high school students from low-income families achieve their academic goals and pursue postsecondary education.

About the Role:

  • Assist in organizing, developing, and implementing social, educational, and service-learning programs/activities for UBP participants
  • Serve as the Penn State on-site program liaison/contact with school district personnel
  • Provide student recruitment and programming for grant-determined school district population, parent/student events, and community stakeholders
  • Offer advising, tutoring, or referral services to program participants on various student services, including high school course selection, college readiness, financial aid, and career services
  • Develop and implement academic year and summer residential programming in compliance with federal guidelines

Requirements:

  • Master's degree plus 1 year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with high school students, preferably in a TRIO program or similar setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Effective analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience with federally-funded TRIO programs
  • Experience working with low-income, first-generation high school students from diverse backgrounds

Logistics:

  • Remote work arrangement with occasional in-person meetings
  • Must work one Saturday per month from September through May
  • Significant summer obligations in June and July
  • Limited-term appointment funded for one year with an excellent opportunity for renewal
