Job description: Pima Community College

Position Title: Math Tutor - TRiO SSS, Project SOAR (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 19.5 hours per week)

Department: East Campus - Project SOAR TRiO SSS Grant/Student Affairs

Rate of Pay: $13.85 - $18.35/hour

Closed Date: September 14, 2023; 5:00 PM Arizona Time

Position Summary:

Our quirky little team is looking for a few good math tutors to not only help our amazing students with their academics, but to be models for how to BE good students. To be eligible for our program, students must be able to earn a degree, with an emphasis on transfer to a university, and must have a documented disability.

We are looking for tutors in Math, preferably who can tutor up through Calculus 1, but also who are willing and able to tutor the lower levels, pre-college math, etc.

As tutors in this program, you will never be expected to already know everything. It is okay to teach yourself, again or for the first time, and demonstrate how to do that to a student. Rather than the model of the tutoring in the college at large, our tutoring is done by appointment. You get to relax and really spend some time helping the students ?get it.? We are currently doing both in person tutoring, usually at East Campus, and virtual tutoring.

Program Summary:

TRiO Student Support Services / Project SOAR is a U.S. Department of Education grant funded program. The purpose of the program is to provide academic support and coaching to Pima Community College students with disabilities, with the overall goal of graduation or transfer.

We are currently in our third year of a five-year grant, and we have been refunded each cycle since our inception in 2010.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist students by providing instructional tutoring and assistance with basic concepts, specific problems, homework, test preparation, and the most effective use of textbooks and instructional materials in a virtual environment and in person
  • Provide students with appropriate and effective study skills to increase their academic success and independence both online and in person
  • Provide students encouragement and support in the areas of self-confidence, study habits, and time management
  • Establish effective and cooperative relationships with diverse student and employee populations
Job Requirements:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Proven classroom excellence (grade A or B) in the subject(s) to be tutored
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Patience, compassion, and a little splash of humor
  • The ability to not just know a subject but teach it to another person
  • Flexibility in instruction and the ability to approach learning from different angles
  • The ability to model and mentor student success, not just the subject being tutored
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, particularly students with disabilities, the LGBTQIA community, and students from different demographic backgrounds
Physical Requirements:
  • Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Expected salary: $13.85 - 18.35 per hour
