Job description: Description
Teaches, in individual, small-group, and classroom settings, college success skills, leadership and professional development throughout the summer and academic year. Advises and instructs HEOP students and provides programmatic support to the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program.
Examples of Duties
- Serves as a student mentor and conducts regular academic counseling sessions regarding courses, academic progress, and personal, financial, and social concerns.
- Provides individual and group instruction on successful study strategies, the development of peer study groups, and maintaining motivation and focus. Conducts workshops and classes focusing on academic success of the freshman population throughout the academic year.
- Develop and conduct leadership classes during HEOP summer program with a focus on learning as a life-long pursuit.
- Offers training and facilitates discussion on issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion, especially as related to the demographic profile of HEOP students.
- Actively involved in University committees and initiatives as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supplemental Functions:
Supports the functions of the Student Success Center as needed.
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree required.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
This is an entry-level position. 1-2 years of experience desired in student leadership, mentorship, advising, or tutoring. Experience gained while enrolled in college is eligible.
Drivers License recognized in NY State and ability to transport students using University vehicles are preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of higher education and a familiarity with the goals, objectives and guidelines related to HEOP.
- Knowledge of effective academic success strategies in areas of college reading and writing, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, critical thinking, independent learning, time management and/or study skills
- Knowledge of and ability to advocate for students from diverse backgrounds; knowledge of the unique challenges faced by academically and economically disadvantaged student populations at the college level; ability to recognize and respond to the needs of underrepresented and historically marginalized students.
- Ability to incorporate, intentionally and respectfully, topics of diversity, equity and inclusion within areas of responsibility, especially as related to student success and retention.
- Ability to appropriately handle confidential material and maintain integrity and confidentiality of data; knowledge of current regulations regarding student privacy, especially FERPA.
- Ability to shift quickly between several tasks without loss of continuity while balancing priorities to accomplish assigned tasks within the required time.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Skilled in use of Microsoft Office software (specifically, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint) as well as the ability to stay current with emerging office technologies.
- Ability to articulate and support the mission and values of St. Bonaventure University; ability to describe the function of the position within the context of the university's mission.
